AMUSEMENTS.

HEWITT'S PICTURES. I A prophet, they say, is- never known t in Ins own eountry. Docs it follow that t a picture enterprise is not appreciated t m its own town* It would seem so, for e the audiences that greet the nightly en- s tertamments billed as "Hewitt's Pic- a tures," though demonstratively pleased,

. are disappointingly small; an d this not- , withstanding that the pictures arc quite . the finest even seen here, and equal t" I . the best produced in the dominion. No only is the illumination good, and th flicker noticeably absent, but thechoic of the films is a remarkably good fen tore. The programme is not overloads, in any particular direction, and now could have wished for a finer entertain incut than was provided last might hi the pictures thrown on to the screei with such life-like movement and «x piossion. Amongst th.e best were "Tfo Widow" and "A Voice from the Dead,' two highly interesting and wondcrfullj presented dramatic studies; whilst equal ly appreciated by the audience was '■ The Mountebank's Son." Humor had its place on the programme, and the pictures were mirth-provoking in the extreme, notably the ertraordmarv vagaries of "The Makeshift Postman" gems included a brilliant presentation of glimpses of a, water fete in Mexico, a study in national dress, customs and scenery, whilst the skill shown by the navigators of t'he clumsy punts and darting canoes in the beautiful waterways was well _worth seeing, even on a canvas screen. There is not the slightest doubt that Mr. Hewitt is offering the New ply. mou>'h public a picture treat, and it is hardly creditable to our people that such excellent pictures attract only moderate or small audiences. A splendid programme will be put on again this evening, and Mr. Hewitt promises a splendid programme when ihis change films arrive in a day or so.
