GENERAL TELEGRAMS
SOUTHLAND SHOW. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The Southland A. and P. Show opened to-day in beautiful weather, which promises well for people's day to-mor-row. The entries show a total increase of 141 ove r those of last year (the previous best). There is a notable increase in cattle, no doubt due to the strides being made by the dairying industry in Southland. Right through the quality of the exhibits was good and the competition keen.
CARRIER PIGEON PICKED UP. Wellington, Last Night. A telegram from the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, to the Secretary of the General Post, Office, Wellington, Bays: "The postmaster at Whitianga wires that Captain Pankow, of the schooner Coronation, from Gisborne, reports that when twenty miles east of White Island a carrier pigeon alights! on the ship. On one leg was found the inscription 'N.Z.,' 1038,' and on the other, '157.' He begs me to report in case 'some importance is attached to Mi" h'rrt. Strong W. and S.W. winds have been blowing here for the last i>vo or ilirec davs. and I am inclined to think the bird was Mown out of its course."

(just twelve months' running), shows receipts amounting to ■£SS<iß and expenditure £9301, leaving a deficiency of £523. The statement includes interest and sinking fund.
