CO-OPERATIVE BACON FACTORY
About 25 farmers were present at the meeting held in the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon to consider the advisability of starting a Co-oflierative Bacon Company, and with a view to acquiring the Fitzroy Bacon Factory. Mr. 'J. F. Eustace, one of the conveners, presided, and apologised for the absence ot Messrs. C. Andrews and W. lioneylicld. He referred to the present low price given for pigs, namely 2%d, and stated that this could hardly be attributed to the fact that there was no demand for bacon, as there was at present a good demand for both bacon and ham. It ■was due to the fact that there was a monopoly. Down the coast they liad to take whatever .price was offered. This, he thought, could be overcome by purchasing the Fitzroy Bacon Factory at a reasonable price and running it on the same co-operative principle as n dairy factory, namely, every shareholder a supplier. The .pigs could be killed at the abattoirs and cured at so much per lb, so that they would be able to estimate the actual cost. After some discussion it was resolved to form a committee to obtain the fullest information as to the advisability of the project, and report to a meeting to he held on Friday, December 24th. The following committee was appointed:— Messrs. J. F. Eustace (chairman), C. Andrews, W. Honeyfield, F. .J. Morris, Brown, Sampson, and F. Pepperill.
