TURF TOPICS. ■ (By "Moturoa.") Stratford nominations are due on Monday night. Bobrikoll' lias been scratched for the Auckland Cup and the Railway Handicap, and Merriwee for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting. Timothy raced with his usual bad luck at Waitara, but is almost certain to catch a race about Christmas time. Hydraulic has a lot to learn before lie will be a safe bet over the small sticks. Sandy Paul can gallop just about as fast as the Inglewood sport after whom he is named. How did Ambergris' win the Maiden? It all goes to show what a poor crowd they were behind the winner. Charlie Cochrane is hard to beat at the barrier, and when he got Lady Heroine out with a commanding lead in the Clifton Stakes it was only a matter ot collecting your "div." The starting at Feilding was awful, and the majority of sprint events were won from the rise of the barrier. Golden Loop was sent out very warm for his only race at Feilding, but was turned the wrong way when the horses were released, and just cantered over the course. Golden Eagle had no better luck. She was, confidently backed for the i on; Stakes, but was left on the mark and galloped last all the way. Tile New Zealand Cup winner, Lady Lucy, was right oil' color in the St. Andrew's Handicap, and was one of the first horses beaten. Bismarck ran an honest race on the first day, but was made too much use of and had nothing left for the last furlong. The same remark applies to the unlucky Roosevelt, who added anatlier second to his unfortunate record. lioos'cveldt and Bismarck were forcing the pace going out of the straight, and when Taskmaster put in his challenge they appeared to stop to nothing. It was a strange coincidence that a three-year-old carrying Clifford's "blue and gold chequers" should again triumph in the big handicap. Husbandman won the race last year with the same weight up. Taskmaster finished gamely, fairly smothering hi s fieia, an d although he puts up 71bs penalty in the Auckland Cup he appears leniently treated on recent form, 'there is no doubt about his staying powers. Xauniiii is said to he waiting for the Electric at Woodville. It will be remembered that the Conqueror gelding ran 'Rangipapa to a neck in the same race last year, and lie can skip like the wind for five furlongs. Flitaway is being mentioned in connection with Auckland Railway Handicap wagering, but the daughter of G'lanranald rarely handles herself well in big fields such as usually contest that event. During the running of one of the races at a northern meeting, a backei, who apparently had s'ome difficulty in distinguishing the horses, exclaimed, "What's that on the rails?" "Paint!' came the answer from a well-known sport, who was ia about the twentythird stage of beeritis. Advocate is quoted a hot favorite for the Auckland Cup, with the muchboomed Ngapuka next in demand. Although apparently harshly treated, Sir Prize is mentioned as an almost certain starter in the two miles race.

Sir Frisco is enjoying a well-earned (pell, but will lie on the job again at

the Christinas meetings. It is a rare thing these days to see appropriate racehorse nomenclature, bill Telescope, by Martian out of Weathereye, is not a bad attempt. Although the publication of dividends is strictly forbidden in this country, you may fea3t your eyes on tliem in Australian weeklies. Sydney papers published the dividends' paid by Lady Lucy and Hooseveldt in the New Zealand Cup, as well as the prices paid in other races; and yet Parliament, in its foolish earlymorning hours, passes laws which force turf followers—if they do not care to apply to the nearest bookmaker—to wait a -week or ten days for their in formation.

Mr. G. P. Donnelly promises to continue horse-rasing harder harder than ever this season, and J. McLaughlin has been installed as private trainer, Expectations of great deeds are centred on Cmeiform's colt foal by Wallace. The youngster is bred highly enough to win anything. Waikaraka is now trained at Awapuni, but being up in the weights amongst his own ciass, the son of Waiuku will take some placing in order to show a profit right away. Resign, by Ranown, has gone over to the ponies'. Glemillin. now an inmate of .Mr. W. Olive's stable at ilawera, is reported to •have improved greatly in appearance, and is apparently quite sound again. .Mr. iT. Eva's t';i-1-nil' will shortly be put into work again. Papahura broke down after going a mile and a "half in the. .Spring Hurdies at Feilding. Penates i< mentioned as an unlikely starter in the Railway Handicap, taking on the Mamuvatu Stakes instead. Johnny Coleman was very unlucky to lose the Wait una Hack Hurdles with Moose. The latter made a bad jump at the last- fence, and I'ritchard made a poor attempt, to hold him together, with the result that lie interfered with Pearl Reef and certainly affected tliat horse's chance. Moose innl the race well in hand at that period, and would have scored comfortably anyhow.

The principal winning owners at Feilding were:—Sir George Clifford £435, Messrs. Svinons £3.">o, J. Ames £240. M. Melrose £2OO, A. Atwood £175, T. Lloyd and L. Pascal £l(i(). 1). Kemp £l2O, and Mr. " Highdcn" £l2O. "Winning jockeys were:—W. ioung (4), A. Ollivcr (2), and 10, Lowe (2). H. Price, T. Brady, J. Morris, F. JS. Jones, T. Pine, S. Reid, L. Wilson, and R. Hatch rode one winner apiece. Rangikuia, a full brother to Rangipapa, went very near gathering in the Nikau Hack Handicap, Luke Wilson just bringing the favorite, Magneto, along in the last few strides', in time to win by a head,

The battle royal between Feu de Joie and Reumac in the Cheltenham Hurdles on Wednesday was worth going miles to see. After Tyrannic had. led tlw field for a mile, Feu de Joie and Reumac ran into the lead and at once commenced a i bitter contest. Three furlongs tro'n ■ home the whips were out on both horses, and up the straight both Morris (on. the winner) and Billy Young (on Reu-' mac) were riding whip and spurs. Neck I and neck the pair battled on, first one and then the other appearing to lioid i an advantage. Fifty yards from home Reumac was in front, but Feu de Joie I gamely answered her rider.'s final calls and scrambled home a winner by the barest of heads. II was a fine race! On the concluding day at Feilding, .Mr. G. F. Moore's horses were auctioned o'f as follows:—Dervish, i£o2, to Mr. E. Jackman, jnn.; Guiding Step, £lO7, to .1. K. MeKelvio; and (.'basse, £.34, to R. A. Mclveii/.ie.

The "horse poet" on the Feilding Star let himself go on both race days. The following are samples of his rhym-n----ing: It's the fhop we are shutting to-day, jTo add to tin* i-rowd at j he races away! Hurrah! Hurrah! Am! away! We already have shut up the ofl'ice and bank. We've roped in the swells and the m j n of high rank. For the Feilding J.C. o'er (.he sport holds the sway. llurrahl Hurrah! He's away! This scribe respectfully suggests that 1 the office should take out a prohibition order against the offender. Again, after Nyland had been shot out from the barrier in the York Stakes he went mad again:— "Bv Jove, they're away! Aud Nyland's iu front; The Highden black horse is all right! Sir Antrim may strain and Sharpshooter shoot, But Nyland won right out of sight!"
