(By "Moturoa.") I The Waitara Racing Club's annual meeting,.whieh takes place on Thursday next, promises to provide a good clan's sport. Good acceptances were received last week and racing should be of an interesting character. Winners will take some picking at the Jeilding Jockey Club's spring meeting which takes place to-day and to-morrow. Seventeen "crack" sprinters remain in the D'lying Handicap, twenty-one in the Hack Welter, sixteen in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, and fifteen in the Kiwitea Welter. It should be a glorious dav for fielders.
The ex-Maorilan'der, Aborigine, who rail »orwar(l- in the Csulfiald Cup, is at present enjoying a four monvJjaHpilii..-. Ten horses have paid up for the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, including Lady Lucy and Roosevelt, who fille-1 the leading places in the New Zealand Cup. Great interest will be aroused in their meeting to-day, but it should be rememliered that Roosevelt is meeting his rival on Olbs ■better terms in to-dav's race, which is run over a half-mile sholte^ > course.■■ Kopu will have to be in good nick to have a chance with P. 5. ana Waitapu has not done much since winning the Etnpire Handicap at the Wanganui winter meeting. Taskmaster ran a good horse in the Champion Plate at Trentham and performed fairly well at Riccarton later on. Husbandman, carrying Bst., won the race fo v Sir tteo. Clifford last season after winning the Canterbury Derby a few weeks previously. Bourrasquc is getting a trifle on the ancient side, but Compass ran so well at the last Grand National meting that he must always he a dangerous horse over a distance when any way fit. Mendip won a double in easy fashion at fortnight ago and puts up penalties which may trouble him. Bismarckis the only local representative. hut Uhlan's son did not perform siifficienily well at Waverley to suggest him as one likely to score in to-day's race. The Auckland-bred horse, Seddon. full-brother to Wairiki, has been sold to a Westralian sportsman, and will in future race in the Golden West. I

The two top-weights and Captain Bell have hen running consistently this season. Chamade (hv Uhlan—Heriot), wno was hrcd by Mr. Dan. O'Brien, won tile pr'mTtpal handicap at Rosehill recently. The unfortunate Het Volt is a full sister to Cfianiade. Merriwa is still feeling the effects of his Wanganui Guineas mishap and lias been sent out to T. H. Lowry's station for an extended spell. Stayboy and Reumac both put up nenaltie. in the Spring Hurdles, which bring their weights up to 11.5 and 9.13 respectively. The two-mile journey will find a lot of them out, and this race usually provides a decent dividend. Hawse's Bay sports will follow Gold Dust, and the old fellow certainly has some pretentions to staying ability. Don Carlos has 'been going as well as anything engaged in the Waituna Hurdles. Last year he ran Oryx to a head in the open hurdle race at Fcilding. Genuine, Regulation and Polyanthus have got amongst the winners t»s; season.
Flingot has been pleasing the track watchers lately and usually runs wo!l on the Fcilding course. Osiris, another Welter candidate, would only have to run up to Australian form to have a fair chance of success. Irish Rifle is galloping Tn great style at Wanganui and weight does not seem to trouble him much. Old Cyreno carries 8.10, including 101b penalty, in the Kiwitea Welter.
The well-endowed Feild'mg Stakes has drawn a fair crowd, but a good number of those engaged may not see the post. The five-furlongs race is generally hard to pick, but with NTawtifovm, Gold Cve*t and Kohinoor in the field an interesting contest may be looked forward to.
Much interest is centred in Golden Loop, who is engaged in the Fitzroy Hack Race at Fcilding. The chcstn.it has 8.6 to carry and does not read badly handicapped considering the moderate lot engaged. Shannon Lass has been responsible for pleasing tasks on tiie Wanganui "tracks recently. Hyman, who broke down in the list Melbourne Stnffes, is making a rapid recovery and will be put on the active list again shortly. Splendid weather was experienced for the South Canterbury spring meeting last week, and racing was interesting. A recent Australian importation in the. *hape of Xavrantravie, an aged gelding by Voyou-Til Bits, got away with the opening event and paid a long price, winning fairlv comfortably. The Timarii Handicap fell to White Cockade, the outsider of the quartette of runners. The winner led all the way and won 'by three lengths from Stratagem. Oiyoi, the favorite, was a bad last.
Silkweb had to put up 'with second place to Lady Orizoin in the Shorts, hi.it won tlie Flying in good stylo later on in the day. As usual, KI r Geo. Clifford's "secondday" pprformer—this time Stratagemgathered in the big race, J. Griggs's Gunboat, who started a warm fancy, filling the role of runner up. Grand Slam let down (he public in the Stewards' Handicap, a four-year-old gelding by ObTigado catching the judge's eye.
Luplite won the Members' Handicap from a pair of fourth-rate sprinters but went under to the favorite. Volodga, in the Farewell Handicap. The second hurdle race fell io Iky Lupin, who claims (he same sire as Golden Loop and Lupulitc. Bay Luri'ii easily disposed of Southern Cross and Kingman in the run home and won handily in 2min 51 4-ssec—a fair performance.
Masonic, who onlv suffered a head defeat in the Pony Handicap at Takapurm on Saturday., is a bit of ''hot stuff" from (lisborue. and is said to'be a flier. The TakapvJna meeting will be eon tinned on AVednesday. Weights for the Taranaki Christinas meeting are due about Friday next.
