AGAINST KfIiMING A UNION,

Christchurch, Last Night. The meeting called by the Trades and Labo r Council for the purpose of forming a clerks' union, proved abortive. It was atended by seventeen clerks who negatived a motion that it was desirable that a union be formed. The clerks who spoke stated they were capable of looking after their own interests and that the majority were well paid and satisfied.
SWIMMING. Christchurch, Last Night. At the annual meeting 0 f the New Zealand Swimming Council it was decided to allot the 11)10 championship to the Auckland centre.
KING COUNTRY LICENSES. Wanganui, Last Night. At the representative session of the district synod of the .Methodist Chiir-h to-day, the following resolution was passed:—That this synod emphatically protests against the granting of wholesale licenses in the King Country, and considers it to be a distinct breach of faith with the Maoris, and calls upon the Government to pass such lcislation as will prohibit the granting of anv licenses in the King Countrv. and demands that the promises made to the natives to protect them from the drink rallie must be held to succeed for all time.
