THE FIRST DAY. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The annual summer show of the Eginont A. and' P. Society opened at Hawera yesterday in tine weather. Promptly the exhibits were in their places at schedule time, and judgiing proceeded expeditiously throughout the dav. The attendance was moderate, as is usual o.i opening day. The arrangements tlirougnout worked smoothly. Combined wit)> the fine exhibitions of stock, of dairy produce and home industries, the attractions of numerous good side-shows and itinerant purveyors of cheap wares and novelties, attractive grounds and interesting competitions, People's Day at the show to-day should compare more than favorably with the Ires* of (previous years.
The quality of the stock exhibits throughout was of a high standard, the most notable falling-oir being in draught entires and brood mares, the competition being very limited.
j Fat stock was the outstanding of the exhibition, and in this class Mr. G. F. Moore, of Kai Iwi, literally scooped the pool, carrying off first award in every class. His exhibits were probably the finest fat cattle ever shown in Hawera. His principal opponents were Mr. William Duirs, of Mokoia.and Mr. William Birdling, of Waitara. In freezers Mr. Moore again secured first and second, Mr. J. F. Pease (Hawera) also showing capital stuff. CATTLE SHORTHORN. There was a capital exhibition of Shorthorns. Mr. G. A. Turner (Eltham) secured first with the cow "Baroness 3rd," calved December 23rd, 1902, in the class cow calved since Ist July or to calve before 31st March. This cow also carried off the championship honors. Mr. Turner, with his cow "Lady Help," was also adjudged second. There were eight exhibits. With Trixy 2nd he took first (and reserve champion) for heifer calved since Ist July, 1000, Moore Hunter's Estate taking the remaining awards in this class. Mr. Turner was, however, beaten with his heifers calved since Ist July 1907, Iby |M|r. R. R Hamilton, of Manutahi, but had his revenge in the class heifer calved since Ist July, 1908, Mr. Hamilton running him close. Mr. Turner's bull Lord Summerton took the championship, and also first for bull calved since Ist July, 1000. For bull calved prior |to that datfi Moore Hunter's Estate secured first place with Te Aute Knight Ist, and also took the reserve championship. The same exhibitor's yearling bull was not opposed.
SHORTHORNS (Suitable for Dairying). For cow calved prior to Ist Julv, 1906, Mr. J. E. Wright (Matapu) took first honors from Moore Hunter's estate and ,Mr. (Turner. Mloore Hunter','. Estate showed the best heifer calved since Ist July, 1906, and Mr. J. C. Wright (Matapu) took the honors in classes heifers calved since Ist July, 1907, and Ist July, 1908, respectively.
HEREFORDS. The entries in this class were not large, but were splendid samples of this growingly .popular breed. Mr. J. Forbes, Normanby, had it all his own way for cows calved since Ist July, 190G, and Mr. G. F. Moore in heifers. Mr. Moore s heifer Lydia 9th, calved August 30t)i. 1906, was awarded the championship ribbon.
Mr. Moore's three-year-old bull, Noble Duke, secured the championship, and the same breeder's yearling Sterling first in his class.
ABERDEEN ANGUS. Mr. J. J. Campbell was the only exhibitor in all the classes (male and female) under this head, and showed the choicest of his well-known herd in splendid condition. POLLED DURHAM.
[ Mr. J. H. Sellers, Okaiawa, had nothing against him, and was awarded all the honors. There were no bulls shown. "DUTCH FRIESAN.
Mr. Newton King and Mr. \V. J. Lovelock (Aokautcre) had no serious opposition. Mr. King secured first and champion with his cow Naylis Gem, and re serve champion with the heifer Dorothei. Mr. Lovelock's heifers were successful in the classes calved since Ist July, 100? and 1908, respectively, Mr. King's bull Bonny Boy took the championship, and Mr. Lovelock's Cliffside Laddie reserve championship. Between them they took all the honors. ■
AYRSHIRE Olson Bros. (Eginont Village) were awarded first and champion with the cow Toodlesj Brown Bros., Ngaire, second. The former's heifer Beauty was adjudged reserve champion, md they also secured premier honors in all the heifer classes. Brown Bros.' bull Beauty Prince took the championship. Mr. F. W. Wilkie in three-year-olds,, Mr. F. -Mills (Tokaora) in two-year-olds', and Brown Bros, in yearlings took first places.
. .v JERSEYS. Big entries and capital competition ruled in this popular class. Mr. C. Clarke's cow Lady Disdain for the third year in succession ennied off the championship; Mr. A. A. Ward, Rugby Road, showing the reserve champion, a two-year-old iieifer. Mr. Clarke's three-year-old heifer Leaflet was easily first in its class, while Dr. P. Noonan's yearling heifer was similarly ahead of its competitors. Mr. Clarke also secured two seconds in the heifer classes. There were 13 individual exhibitors of Jerseys. Mr. J. S. Short, with his bull Pride of BeaconsfieH, took champion orders, bfr. A. A. Ward's three-year-old, Mr. P. ,T. Petersen's two-year-old (reserve champion), and Dr. Noonan's Little Sultan in vearlings, were the leading prizetakers." Mr. J. G. Wright showed the only bull of milking strain. GRADE JERSEY. Mr. D. Watkin, Huiroa, with a grand dairy cow, took the honors for cow 27 months and upwards. Mr. J. C. Monteßorc secured first from a very good class of heifers over 16 months, with Mr. Linn's exhibit second. In heifers under 15 months, Mr. A. O'Donnell's estate showed the first prize animal.
SHEEP d LINCOLN, \ Mr. W. H. Wybourne had practically ( no opposition in Lincolns and secured t eight firsts -out of nine classes, besides [ championships for both ram and ewe. ] Mr. J. D. Hughes secured first for two j rams under 18 months. 1 ENGLISH LEICESTER. ' Mr. R. Bremer (Waverley) was the , only exhibitor in this breed, and had , matters all his own way. | BORDER LEICESTER. ' Similarly Mr. (1. V. Pearcc, of Kaka- , ramea scooped the pool in the nine 1 1 classes under this heading. KOMNEY MARSH. Mr. J. D. Willis (Hawera) took first and champion for ram of any age. With ewes and pair of rams under 18 months Mr. Wm. Gibson, of Feilding, was successful. SHROPSHIRE DOWN. Mr. J. J. Campbell swept the board in this breed. SOUTHDOWN. Moore nunter's Estate and Mr. J. Knight (Feilding.) divided the awards fairly evenly, the former taking the championships in rams and the Uttar in ewe - LINCOLN. Mr. H. Middlcton (Waverley) led in each of the three classes, Mr. A. S. Tonks taking second awards, BORDER LEICESTER. Mr. A, ?. Tonks (Hawera) was not opposed. FAT SHEEP (Shorn). For three fat sheep under 18 montjs (Down or short-wool), Mr. H. Bpro;t (HawTra) prevailed. For best five fat lambs (long-wool) Mr. H. T. Lysaght and five fat lambs (any Down class) Moore Hunter's estate showed the win""n fat wethers, Mr. J. R. Covrigin, and fat ewes, Mr. H. Middlcton, wore the successful exhibitors. FREEZERS. Mr. H. Middleton's (Waverley) fat sheep took the awards, and Moore Hunter's Estate showed the premier fat '; lambs. i PIGS. Mr. J. H. I entries. For mare same age, in foul, Mr J. J. Campbells Dora of Kaupokonni was first. Mr. F. A. Bremer showed the 11 best foal, and Mr. Campbell in 3-year , filly or mare. In two-year-old filly or , mare Mr. J. S. Oughton (Okaiawa) triumphed over Mr. Campbell and .\K t Grant. The yearling lilly class brought . a big field, Mr. G. F. Moore's Princess Royal 3rd taking premier honors. Mr. D. McCarten in two-year-old and Moore Hunter's Estate in yearling geldings were successful. Mr W. Goodland showed the best yearling colt, and Mr. F. A.. Bremer second. Messrs Rhodes Bros. (Castlecliff) took the honors in the class three yearlings by one sire. Mr. J. J. Campbell took first for best pair mares any age, and also best, pair anv or cither sex. Mr. R. 11. Johnston showed the prize-winner in geldings four years and upwards. Mr. E. Short exhibited the best dry mare, 4 years and upwards, and Mr. R. J. Johnstone the best pair of geldings. Mr. Campbell defeated Mr. Short for best three-horse team, the property of one owner. THOROUGHBRED. For yearling colt, filly or gelding, Mr. G. F. Moore secured first, and Mr. J. Gray (HaweraT Erst for two-year fillv or gelding. Mr. J. Hook, junr., -with Aquillo, took the honors for brood mare four years and over. CARRIAGK AND COACHING. Moore Hunter's Estate took first for brood mare four years and over, with Mr. W. E. Broderick second. For three- ' year marc, filly or gelding, Mr. T. R. Exley, and lor two-year filly or gelding Mr. R. J. Linn were first respectively. ■ Mr. R. G. Linn ateo showed the best yearling fitly, colt or gelding.
PONIES. In the class for brood marc, not exceeding 12% hands, V. H. Nolan (Stratford) won from W .0. Higginson. Mr. W. N. Jenkins (Eltham) showed the best pony mare or gelding not above 13'/ 2 hands, shown in saddle, and with the same horse, Plunket, also carried of the award not over 12y 2 hands.
COMPETITIONS Captain Mitchell won the driving competition, with A. Mitchell secoal. The Maiden Hunters was won by C. Gordon's (Wanganui) Aberdeen, with J. R. Hunter's Bill second. Mr. B. Gordoi, on Starlass, secured the award for the best rider. In the Pony Leaping W. U. Higginson's Star was first, and R. Morrisey's Lancelot second, the rider of the latter, Master C. Smith, securing the prize for best rider. The jumping throughout, especially of the ponies, was first-class. The Hunting Competition drew twenty competitors, and was eventually won by Mr. Norman Moore's Loafefos, with J. R. Hunter's Bill second and Mr. Chaney'6 Starlass thirl. Mr. A. Mitchell was adjudged the best rider, and also won the bare-back rilling competition, with A. Gordon second.
HOME INDUSTRIES. There were large entries throughout in the Home Industries and School and TcchniVal exhibits, and the exhibition was the centre of much attention throughout the day. DAIRY PRODUCE.
