FIRE BOARDS' CONFERENCE
CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. iij Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. A conference of delegates of fire boards opened to day, Mr. A. L. Farions, of Chris tchurch, being in the chair; It was decided to ask the Minister to amend the Act to provide for a superintendent working outside the boundary of his own district in emergeney; also that church authorities |ud owners Of places of amnsement be made liable for the provision of fire escapee. A reir.i; fr v> Paimerston North, that fire boards be exempt from the operations of the Arbitration and Conciliation Acts or any subsequent Acts, was agreed to; as was also a proposal from Christchurch that the Government be tlsked to reduce the charges of installation and maintenance of wires for the fire alarm system. T)|e question of the superannuation fond ffiv th: l permanent staffs of brigades was referred to the next conference It was decided 'to ask that the Fire Board Act be amended to make fire boards "local bodies" in so far as borrowing is concerned, so as to bring them under the operation of the Loans to Local Bodies Act. The expenditure on the eight'.en . fire toards for tli.. vrnr ending June 30 last amounted to C 20.024, of which the Government contributed C 1217. The cities and boroughs contributed £.12,403, and the insurance companies a like amount.
