BUSINESS WITH NEW ZEALAND. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyrigni Melbourne, Friday. Giving evidence before the Senate Committee on the Cable Service, Mr. Crooke, superintendent in Victoria of the Eastern Extension Company, sail of his company was that business did not respond to i\ reduction in rates below a certain point. He had experience in Nl> w Zealand over that. The cable press business to Mew Zealand decreased by over thirty thousand words yearly from 1000 to 1900. The proprietors of newspapers found that local news was more acceptable than cable news from abroad.
tt CONTRADICTION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The statement reported in Melbourne cables to have been made by Mr. Crook.-, superintendent of the Eastern Extension Company, that press messages to •V w Zealand show a decline from 1000 to 1000 of thirty thousand words yearly, if correctly reported, is a mistake. Oti the contrary, the number of words received h:v always exceeded that year to the extent of as ninth as 87,000 words on one occasion.
