THE MONEY MARKET. Mr. 0. K. Major, mortgage agent, Ilavera, reports: —There can be no ueiier evidence of the marked improvement in the money market than the tardy admissions througli the Press of such being the case by those who for obvious reasons were interested in maintaining high rules of interest. The Premier's financial arrangements made during his visit lo England and the increase in value of our staple exports has resulted in substantia I financial hene(il« to the Dominion. Tile renewed activity of the (iovernnu-nt Advance* Department has 3j relieved the pressure ironi the individual lender and lending companies Uat the rate of interest foa» fallen, and lenders are not *>u insistent as to ihe margin required or so critical of the security it>elf. Owing to the combination by politicians and financier* wlio took advantage of Hie ivlle.\ in New Zealand of the lo*s of confidence in America and consequent crisis there to cry "Wolf," a financial panic was only avoided here by reason of th« Government lending insti. iutions coming to ihc rescue, principally of the borrnwers of small sums. The crisis is past, and dwellers in the Do"minion have much to be thankful for. lor never in its history has there been so many visible indications of prosperity and for its continuance. Quite unexpectedly the bank returns for the quarter just ended show a decrease in advances and an increase in deposits. 1 have lately negotiated several advances for large sums at 5 per cent., and am •hopeful that during the coming yea", unless some Old World complications take place, to be able to quote money at 4% per cent, upon good margin freehold.
