The annual plain and fancy dress ball for juveniles wliicli is to he held in the Theatre Royal on the night of the King's Birthday should be as great a success as ever. There are some novelties this year. A team of miniature lire, men, equipped witli reel, will take the boards and give a display of lire brigade woik. There will also be a team of tiu>Maoris, trained by Mr. Atna, and these will give a halia. The final rehearsal will he held at the Theatre Royal on Monday evening. For the adult function follow ug Mrs. George's orchestra will supply ,he music. The committee guarantees a good floor and a good supper. A reminder is given of the fact that entries close to-night for tli e Taranaki Agricultural Society's butter-fat compit.'tion. Several entries have already been received.
A wedding cake worth 30s and twenty copes of "The Handy Helper" have beeii voluntarily offered to the Central School bazaar committee by Mr. John C. Le<™The committee wish to thank Mr. Leg"' for lus generous offer. The North Pol,, question has created a great deal of controversy, and it is now reported that Peary has established his claim of having reached it. On this great question the demonstration to be given m the Recreation Grounds o n the Jth .November will convince the most sceptical as to who reached the Pole. A member of the school committee has donated a tennis racquet to he competed-for at a mixed boys' and "iris' tennis tournament to be held in "connection with the Central school fete. Owing to the King's Birthday falling on Tuesday oth, Mr. Xewton King's springing heifer sale at Stratford set down /or that date will be held on Monday, Bth inst.
The initialing of the plan to be used for "A iku-luior's Honeymoon" has met with everybody's favour. People who anticipate the rush for seats and therefore attend early, have the confidence and satisfaction of knowing that it is owing to their own efforts as to the position they secure in the dress circle or stalls. The plan will open sharp at 8.30 on Monday morning. A shipment of Japanese silks in white and cream, one yard wide, is attracting attention at Whites' this week. Some of them are really very superior in make and weight, especially' that, at 3s Gd per yard. Other qualities in the same width are from 2s 6d per yard. A beautiful French silk tussore, 30 inches wide at 3s! lid is very new in the way of a dress silk and of more than ordinary merit. Samples on application.—Advt.
