THE MANAWATU SHOW.
Palmerston North, Last Night.
Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. The attendance on People's Day at the Jlanawatu Spring Show was 25,000 (sicj Toe total takings at the gate ami stands exceed last year's by £BO. The yeather w as glorious to-day, and th' grand parade was the finest display ot e toek seen for years. The big hunters' jumping event was won by an Auckland owner, O'Rorke's Coister, with Love',l second and Fifi third. There were fiftytwo entries. Miss Campbell (Wanganui) won the ladies' driving. Many visitors are staying for the military tournament, which promises to be a great success.
(From Our Special Reporter). The Minister for Agriculture, who ivsited the show, was much impressed with the exhibition. He thought the show of sheep very fine, the exhibition of dairy stock excellent, especially the (specimens of the Holstein breed, and the display of horses very good. The show as a whole, he said, had attained a particularly high standard. One of the features of the show was the excellent display of dairy stock. Manawatu scored most heavily in the pedigree animals. The Waikato entrie* in the fat cattle sections were of a superior order, and carried everything before ffiem. There was an excellent show of Lincoln sheep. Wybourne, the Waverley breeder, whose entries were in first-class :»how condition, scored heavily, and divided the honors with Perry, the great Wairarapa breeder. Mr. E. Short did tiest in Romneys, Mr. S. R. Lancaster in English Leicesters, Mrs. Ormond in Border Leicesters. In the Down classes Mr. Mcßae was the most successful. There has never in the history of the show been a better display of dogs than on the present occasion. Altogether 211 dogs were on exhibition, the majority lieing of a high standard. Collies and Irish terriers were perhaps the strongest sections, bulldogs also being in good force.
Mr. J. S. Oughton, the successful Okaiawa breeder, gained the special prize awarded to the best three-year-old colt, Mr. J. D. Mitchell, of Manaia, being similarly successful in the two-year-old colt class. Mr. Mitchell's stallion "Hera I Go" secured thampion honors and a special prize. He is a magnificent animal, perhaps the best that was on the grcund. Mr. Newton King's string of six Ho'.-slein-Friesians secured five firsts, a championship, reserve championship, and a second prize. The gem of the entry .was the cow Nazli's Gem, bred by Mr. King himself and sired by Sir de Kol Inka Pietertje, the bull recently sold by Mr. King to the Government. This cow ■was stated by good judges to be the best Holstein cow in the Dominion. The reserve championship was secured by the bull Royalty, a two-year-old, by Woodland King 11. Galatea's Quceu, and was also bred by the exhibitor. The other awards were first for bull calved since July, 1908, and second for Jyill calved since July, 1907; firsts for yearling and two-year heifers. The Hon. Minister for Agriculture was among the inahy enthusiastic admirers of these cattle. The cow Nazli's Gem has now won championships at three shows in succession—Hawke's Bay, Carterton, and Manawatu.
A somewhat unique record, testifying to the qualities of a particular strain of Jerseys, was established by the prignny of Campaniles Sultan (imported from the Channel Islands by Mr. E. C. Griffiths) and now the property of Mr. C. Clarke. Out of seven entries in the class for yearling Jersey bulls, Campaniles Sultan's progeny took first, second, and third awards. In the class for yearling heifers, out of about a dozen entries, the animals by the same sire were awarded first and second places. To secure five out of six places in two classes and from a fairly numerous entry from the best herds in the island is distinctly creditable to the late stud farm at Bell Block, where all of them first saw daylight.
