The largest tiro for live years destroyed the old exhibition building, which was' occupied by Roberts and Company as a grain warehouse, Abbotts' freezing works, the Elite skating rink, and H number of drapery, fruit, and (other shops. A strong wind caused the flames to spread rapidly, and quickly destroyed the main building. The Bremen, wlio were handicapped through several o! their number having recently resigned «* a protest against the appointment of a Melbourne man as superintendent of the brigade, mainly confined their efforts to saving the surrounding buildings, several of which were damaged. Some of the lireinen and their volunteer assistants were overcome by heat and smoke. It is estimated the damage amounts to £IO,OOO or £15,000.
