DROWNING OF A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Ausucmliua. Auckland, Wednesday. Two natives, with Mrs. Elliott and the latter's sixteen-months-old child, were capsized in a boat which sank threj miles off Maloiki, near Coromandel. One of the Maoris made great efforts to save the child, but without avail. Two natives went to the rescue of the woman, woo reached the shore in a verr exhausted condition. The body of the child was subsequently washed ashore. A SUDDEN DEATH. Auckland, Wednesday. Edward Kiernan, aged 40, died suddenly while working in the stokehold of the steamer Ngatiawa. THROWN FROM A TRAP. Ashburton, Last Night. While driving to Ashburton yesterday, Mrs. M. Rooney, of Winchmorc, was thrown out it her trap and severely fractured her skull. She is now progressing favorably, though ler condition is etill regarded as critical. FATAL SELF-INFLICTED WOUND. Christchurch, Last Night The elderly man, Hamilton Geary, who attempted to cut his throat with an ordinary pocket-knife on Friday evening last, died at the hospital on Tuesday [ night. An inquest was held to-day, anil a verdict of death frsm 'heart failure, ; accelerated by a wound self-inflicted while in a temporary state of unsound ' mind was returned.
