CRICKET.

I CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. By Telegraph.—Press 'Association. Christchnrch, Last Nighqt. 1). 11. ThiLiisuii, the hon. ,ecreiary uf the Caiiterlrary Cricket Assuci.vtion. received a letter from H. Truinlile, Melbourne, to-d.iv. stating that W. Carlton, of the Xortii' Mellioanie Chili, was willing to accept a two years' cngag'.-mc-it as'coach to the Canterbury Cricket Association. Caikort is about the best all-round man in his club.

XOUTH TARANAKI ASSOCIATION'. The North Tarannki Cricket Association's t-np fixtures commenced yesterday. The weather, although looking unpropilion- in Ihi' morning, was splendid, and the grounds were in excellent order. Tlie inauguration of the two daysir.atehes liad an appreciable effect upon the play, particularly in the Rovers— Inglewood match, when the New l'l.v711011th. side, tatting first, put up tlie good scon: of 254 for eight wickets. This is .1 record for the fnglowood ground, and a record for North Taranaki cricket, whilst Hasell's carefully compiled !37 not out was also a record for the 'ground. Carrington Road met Waitara at Waitara, and scored 116 in tlie first innings against 48 by the local men.

ROVERS v. IXGLEWOOD.

The Roverg had difficulty in securing a full eleven, influenza having made its inroads amongst the members of the team. Going into bat, Weston and Williams got 37 for the first wicket, the asphalt pitch being, of course, all in the batsmen's favour. Williams was caught out, Harris' height getting him a fine right-handed catch. Weston was well set when he was run out. Arden, who is developing "leg-before" very considerably, met his fate from this cause. Hasell's innings, lasting about a couple of hours, was a splendid effort. His hit 6 •were wcl' placed, and ,on the Recreation Grounds would have been worth 11 great deal more, but at Inglewood onlv three runs were given for a hit that would bring a "fonrer" on the local ground. He put up 137 not out. All of (he bitsmeii played well for an opening match, and there was no "tail." The innings being uncompleted, the howling averages have not been made up. Seven bowlers were tried. Tho Rovers' remaining batsman is E. Lash the captain of the team. Details of the scores.—
