It was tho worst for forty years and came without warning. Terrible damage was done both ashore and nlloal, 411 per cent, ot the native craft being destroyed, intituling 50 cargo boats. The Chinese tinder llaichai parted from its cables, drifted on to the rocks, and was considerably damaged. Twenty of the crew jumped overboard in a pan.c and were drowned. The river was full of dead bodies and wreckage. It is estimated that the total loss ot life was 2000.

The Tamusi river overflowed and hundreds of buildings were blown down and washed away. A great number of people was drowned or crushed to death. The railway was seriously damaged end the cable line with Foochow destroyed.

The lvph<>ou at Formosa on September 14 devastated the northern part of the island. One hundred and twelve native vessels were wrecked. 1000 oui'lini.s destroyed and ninnv lives lost. A second cyclone on September 18 swept the northern and central districts.
