AVENUE ROAD CARD CLUB.

ANNUAL SOCIAL. The Avenue Koad Card Club struck wretched weather for us second annual social in the Brougham Street Hall, but the recollection ol last year's event was still fresh in the minds of the people, and there wa» a very large attendance, rain notwithstanding. Over a hundred took part in the progressive euchre tournament, and there were numbers looking on. This was not a euchre party in the ordinary sense. . The club hall purchased exception!!)- good prizes, namely, a silver-backed liair-brush and comb and a leather dressing-case for first and second ladies respectively, and an ornamental inkstand and a walking-stick for the men. Then a strong ladies' committee had been placed in charge of the supper arrangements, and under the presidency of Mrs. R. Jury they did excellent work, the supper being nearly all donated by friends and including all the most fancied dainties of the dancing fraternity. The table, too, had been nicely decorated with white and yellow (flowers, arum lilies forming the centrepiece. The ladies' committee comprised Mcsdaiues R. Jury, R. B. Smith, J. Blewman, Angus. J. Richards, \V. Hooker, W. Uo'ierts, Back, and R. Birch. Mm Angus decorated i-lie tables. The prize-winners •n the enrhre tournament were:—Ladies: Mrs. .1. Roberts 1. Miss Coburn 2, Miss O. Bnilot.t booby. Gents: Mr.- XV. Hooker I. Mr. F. Joseph 2. Mr. Middlemiss booby.

After supper a dance was held, a i.l was very successful, although at the i-omnii-n- e—ent the floor was a bit heavy, Mr. Bert Bullot, who had supervised the tournament, acted as M.C. Capital music was provided bv Mrs. Woods (piano) and Mr. Richards fconv-n. Mr. \V. Richards, the secretin-'--, and the members of the club aid Indies' commiilies are to le congratulated upon the complete success of the function, which was a fitting ■• wiu.i-np" n'. the season.
