RIFLE SHOOTING.
THE EMPIRE MATCH. WON BY AUSTRALIA. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received II), 9.30 p.m. Sydney, October 10. The Empire Match was concluded in fine weather, the Commonwealth putting up tlie grand total of 2088, to New Zealand'* 1058. The weather was fine, and the wind steady, but the light was troublesome. Yesterday the New Zealauilers were bothered with the wind and mirage. To-day they got the windage all right, but were at'sea with the lignt especially at 1000 yd*. Another thing that told against the visitors was the want of a time-limit. Following the usual custom, they got in their shots with business-like promptiture, whereas in many cases the Australians waited for a favorable slant-wind or totter light, not infrequently wasting over five minutes between their shots. The home team again led at all ranges, being 19 to the good at the first, six at the°seeond, and 40 at the third. Their leads at yesterday's ranges were respectively 14 30 and 21. '
Colonel Hughes gives full credit to the Australians for their win, and declares that the generalship and metlioc's of coaching the Australian riflemen were far superior to New Zealand. Scores:
