TURK TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting will open at Trentham to-day. The principal races will be the Wellington R.C. Handicap, run over a mile and a-quarter, and the Wcllesley Stakes, a four-furlong flutter for two-year-olds.

Sir Prize was railed through to Wellington on Monday and will be given a run in the Wainui Handicap, which should be too short a race for the chestnut to shine out prominently. • The Wellington Handicap promises to draw a fine field and punters will probably find the winner hard to pick. All Red and Swimming Belt were seen oit at Wanganui but finished outside th; placed division. Sandstream won a double at Hawke's Bay and is said to be very well. Sir Frisco puts up a 51b penalty for his win at Otaki, which brings "his weight up to Bst 131b. Sir Tristram has been galloping nicely at Trentham. Merrie Zealand, Abcrbrothock and the crack Auckiandcr Elysian have been winning freely this season and .1 iv probably the best conditioned ones engaged in the race. Flitaway pleased the touts at Riccarton lately and is reported to be well forward. Swimming Belt won the race last year with 7st 81b in the saddle, Zimmerman and Sir Frisco filling the other places. In to-day's Wellesley Stakes the Hawke's Bay two-year-olds, Kohin'oor. War Sorig, Formby. and Winning Postj vho won races recently will be a strong hand for Sir Geo. Clifford's Saxifrage vilid Co. to tackle. Formby and Enyo carry the cerise of th; Kararnu stable, and War Song and Koliinoor represent Mr. T. 11. Lowrv.

The race won by Magneto at Otaki last week was only worth 45 sovs., and the Merriwee fiily will not carry a penalty in the Einiutaka Hack Handicap 10-dav.

As Conquest has returned to Auckland it is likely, says' an exchange, that R. Hatch will pilot Aimwill at Trentham. Another open race should be to Shorts Handicap. Gipsy Belle won the event last year and is a smart filly over a short course. Simplex puts up 71bs extra for winning at Otaki, and will tarry 7.11. Gold Lace has been run-

ning prominently since the season opened and i s n greatly improved filly. She also carries a 71b penalty, which brings hrr load up to 9.4.

Irish UiHo was galloping well before leaving Wanganui on Saturday and has Mime 011 a lot since the .Wanganui Spring meeting. San Fernando won .it Otaki on Thursday and a penalty brings bis weight up to Bst 121b,

Wirral is top-weight in a poor field in the Hack Hurdles, Liberator beat a good favrrite in Master Douglas in tile same event last year.

BobrikofT and Cymbiform escape p.T>aitics for the New Zealand Cup for their respective wins last week. The former also dodgm a penalty for the .Stewards' Handicap.' 1". Tillcv's team for Trentham includes Ladv Lucy. Ambrosian and Sir Uililn. Tlie trio are in great heart. R. W. Kin-,' is spoken of as tin; likely pilot of Prim in the New Zealand Cup. Ancyele ended an inglorious career by dropping dead in a paddock at Hastings last week.

Kopu i* hein;; rushed along again ac Hastings in view of his Auckland CllD engagement.

Zimmerman is now doing stud duly at Karamu.

Idralism will not lie seen out at Trentham.

King Soult must he added to tlie 'lst of horses .still engaged in the Wellesley Stakes. The Ancklander is galloping nicely at Trentham and will ho piloted by P. Brady. Maori King and Bridge are the latest withdrawals from the Champion Stak.-s to be run at Trentham on .Saturday.

01<1 Jewellery has been nominated for events at the Auckland spring meetin,;. Local entries include Dr. Shimose, Rohepotae, Uhlando and St. Kildare. The pony Maika lias paid up for the Onehunga Handicap, to be run at Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting which opens on Saturday. Maika has 7.12 and is giving away a couple of pounds to Orange and Blue, who was a I few years ago at the top of the handicap. Considering that pony racing in iegistered ranks is practically conflntd to Alexandra Park (Auckland) thoy muster up some fair lllliputlans up North. Mailings, Mistime, Octoroon and Carmania have at times been capable of keeping the "big liorses" at tneir best. gait.

Aborigines' forward running in last Saturday's Caulfield Cup came as 1 pleasurable suprise to the majority of race-goers. That the Maorilander'was a brilliant customer he amply proved before he crossed the Tasman, but it was generally considered that with Bst 01b against his name for the twelve-fur-long event, the handicapper had taken good care of him. From the cabled reI port of the contest it appears tiiat New Zealand-bred horses were prominent all the way and Aborigine must have made I up a good deal of ground In the straight. The honors of the race go to Aborigine, who was conceding his rival 81bs. Aborigine has been a lucky purchase for tho Indian horse-owner Mr. Gordondoas Khattau, who purchased the black son of Merriewee for 800 guineas and bis share of the Caullield Cup stakes ie £1425. Aborigine pnts up a 101b penalty for the Melbourne Cup, which brings his weiglit up to the steadier of fist 4lb. Perolina and Vasa have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington meeting. According to the N.Z. Times, Elysian and Gipsy Belle, are first favorite for the Wellington double—Racing Club and Shorts Handicaps. The Waverley correspondent of the Paten Press states: "On Saturday I visited M. Gardiner's stable. The first J box contained Crucinella, who is looking I big and well. Last year's sorencee has entirely disappeared, and everything 1 leads one to think she will acquit her-

self well during the coming season. Koran was in the next box. He will be

engaged at the Waverley meeting, and from all appearances 6hould get amongst the winners. Taupo, who will be engaged In the hurdles, never looked better. Ambergris, by Daystar—Parvo, innd another colt by Lupin, which have I jnat been taken in hand, look a very likely pair and are stowing splendid advancement in their preparation for future meetings. Tlie Sotilt filly has bom. turned out until Christmas, when 6,ie will be taken up for two-year-old racing. About a months ago Mr. J. Coobe was unlucky enough to lose the foal of Duchess. Mr. George Luptou lost a three-year-old filly last week. A sta-re flew lip from the ground and struck it under (he flank. The wound seemed a trifling one, but a few days later tho beast died."
