TRADE AND FINANCE.
( A UKVIKW. > , There is no noticeable ciiiiiign ill II; i ► conditions of this market in Now Z'.i- ---| land (says the Trade Review), the supi ply oi money both in blinking cirri's i and in the open market being fairly suf- | ficieiil for ordinary requiem ills. i The i|uarterly return., to the 3i)ih Sep- ' Leather are looked forward to with much J interest, both those relating to banking i business and those dealing with the ini- ' ports and exports of the Dominion. , As regards imports and exports, t'ie 1 September quarter is tile weak period I of the year, For exports it is the fag end of the year', and the volume of ship- • ments is always very light, while imports are usually pretty heavy. It is practically certain that on this occasion exports will prove heavier and imports lighter than usual; but the Review' thinks 1 it is too niueli to hope that the excess will not prove to be on the side of imports. At the same time the September quarter brings with it the requirements of the producers for the means of preparing and moving the season's products. For these reasons the coming banking returns cannot be expected to disclose much, if any, case in the financial position. Indeed, it is possible that any j alteration may be in the other direction. However, the season is exceptional'.; forward, and the returns of the wool clip and of the dairy trade are likely to be higher than ever, and to be gathered in at an earlier date. The prospects in the near future are regarded as very encouraging. On the other hand, our Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) reports having made | satisfactory arrangements during iri 6 recent visit to London for the supply of needed funds for the Advances to Settlers Office, for public works, and for local governing bodies. The money required for these purposes being thu6 provided for outside the Dominion, the local market will be relieved of the demands which! in recent years have absorbed funds which might otherwise "nave been available for local requirements. There is therefore every prospect, in the absence of unlooked-for complications, of a steady improvement id the financial position "with the turn r-f the year and thenceforward. I
