EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Chiislchureh, Lint Night. | An inquest touching the death of [ Captain l'avilt was opened before .Mr. Hasolden. Coroner, to-day. W. A. Hum phreys, driver of the ear which collided ■ with the tram'way post and caused the :dea-tli of Pavitt, stated that at fust ic • nought the steering gear was not working properly, but he was uncertain whether the skidding was not due to deflated tyres, lie described tow the accident occurred and stated the car was going at a speed of about twenty miles an hour when it struck the pole. In crossexamination he stated that he had "irl four drinks of beer at Yaldhurst, ou'v one on the occasion of the second visit, and about twenty minutes before len\mg for town. The inquest was adjourned till to-morrow.
