FARM AND DAIRY.

CONTAGIOUS ABORTION. ALLEGED CARBOLIC ACID CURE. At the late Agricultural Societies' Conference Mr. C. J. Reakes, Director of the Live Stock and Meat Division of the Department, was asked if the giving of a dose or carbolic acid would cure contagious abortion. Mr. Reakes replied that it would not. This opinion has been confirmed by a departmental committee (of which Professor McEadgean, the eminent veterinarian, was a member) set up by the Board of Agriculture of England, appointed to investigate the disease. The finding of the committee in regard to the alleged cure by carbolic acid was as follows:—'"As a preventive agent we believe carbolic acid to be useless. Even if it were possible to administer very large doses of this poisonout substance, one could not expect to be able to give enough to destroy the bacilli which have tan swallowed and mixed with the contents of the animal's stomach and intestines, and it would have been equally hopeless to expect to destroy in this way the bacilli whish have already reached the womb. This alleged method of prevention muet be regarded as an absurdity, which has gained a certain amount of support owing to observations carelessly collated and. carelessly interpreted."

Air. Young, the Tanuiaki veterinary of the Department, lectured to tae senior boys of the Stratford High School the other day 011 the treatment and management of horses. Mr. Turner, buyer for J. and J, Loin dale and Co., and who was termed the Napoleon of the butter trade at the beginning of the season, has beaten ait his previous records, as the following figures show (sayu a contemporary;. The total tonnage of cheese secured by" him amounts to 5050 tons, made up as follows:—Kaupofeonui 2200 tone, T, L. Joll 2000 tons, Awaiuna 500 tons, Lowgarth 300 tons. Luptons 50 tons. Of butter he has'got 042 tons from Wiienuakura 120 tons, Opunake 220 tons, Glen, Oroua 222 tons, and Awahnri 100 tons. The approximate sterling value of this produce amounts to £331,020. A well-known identity in connection with the dairying industry says that it is a, bad system to follow for'a dairy factory to sell half the season's output and consign the other half. Tlie Iloine firm that bought the first half may have a lot of the produce in stock wh n the second half reached the market. In any ease the second half would have t«» make its own customers in the middle of the season. .Many other brands would already have a good start, as the factories which got tin- first sirjiuents home would have so many samples sen: out all over the country, if th» linn* were to handle the whole of the sri son's output. It. was a decided advan I age to send produce to the same linn the whole season.

Scientific dairy farming is making rapid strides in the district around 11\ wera. On Mr. 1L .1. Linn's farm. Okai-awa-N'ormanby jroad, by a combination of the latest dairying invention? the milk is' placed in cans in the w.i. gon without being handled at all on the farm. The milking machine installed is the ''Simplex" which is worked b> means of an electric motor. Facility for ensuring cleanliness about Ihe she.i are splendid, there being an ample sup ply of hot and cold water, etc. Mr. Linn expects to put through a herd of 100 Jersey cows in ninety minutes. At present he has lift in milk, of which 1 ? arc heifers, and these are giving 2200 lbs of milk a dav with a 4.2 test.
