Matf.mui is reported to be going well again at Randwiek, and may do Mr. IXiii. O'Brien a winning turn ve.-y shortly. The three-year-old Birkenhead colt, Aliseihief, still continues to gather «n weight-for-age events in sunny Queens land. The ex-Maorilandor won the Queensland Guineas on October 2».1. running a mile in lmin. 40 1 / 4 sec., and winning easily bv two lengths. In recent years' New Zealand hors«.s have always taken a leading hand in the Sydney Metropolitan Handicap. Maniapoto scored his sensational victory in 1905; Solution led Poseidon home in 1900; Apologue ran into second place the following year, and Maranui and Golden Slipper each ran into third place in the last two contests.

With one exception, all the riders in •the A.JXJ. Derby were fined .CI apiece for being late at the post. The New Zealand bred horse Chivalrv. whilst being ridden home from a Poann (India) race -meeting, threw and killed his rider, a "crack" native jockey.

Maltine, winner of tliis year's Metropolitan, was ridden without eibher spurs' or whip. The daughter of Malster was i never further back than fifth at any stage of the race, running kindly ] throughout, and at the distance sinthrew out a challenge to Golden Slipper and Olivaster, and beat the pair hoin; l after a ding-dong go. Kairomn, with H. Cairns up, was senl out a warm favorite for the First Hurdles at Ramhvick. The New Zealander moved off slowly, and was in the rear at thp mile post when he came into collision with a fallen horse, and wai» pulled up. The Stewards wanted to know what it was all about, and accept ed Cairns' explanation. Black Reynard was running prominently all the way. I but broke down half a mile from horn'. 1 and finished outside a place.
