TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"), The Napier Park, Otaki'Maori, and Dunedin spring meetings open to-day and will be concluded 011 Thursday. The Caulficld Cup will be run on Saturday.
Jockey T. Pritchard was in great form at Marlborough, riding six winners; including a dead-lieat. For winning on the second day at Blenheim, Lawn Rose does not incur a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. The stakes were only worth £BS to the wiuner.
Golden Eagle is at Mas'terton. Weights for the spring meeting are due about Fridav.
Sandstream has now won three raw-, this season—one at Martini and a double at Hastings. The San Flan gelding has notched a 101b penalty for the Sew"Zealand Cup.
llie Wonderland horse, Whimper, has been running consistently of late, and at Wanganui on the second day gave Waipunehn 131bs and a lieating. "whimper is in receipt of lib from Waipuuelut in the Greenmeadows' Hack Hurdles at Napier Park. C. Jenkins and 11. Gray each rode three winners at Hastings, bringing their totals for the season up to !) and 11 wins respectively. They top the winning jockeys' list at present. Sid. Ueid was again seen in tile saddle at the Hawke's Bay meeting, and rode Maori King into second place in the Hawke's Bay Guineas. Thetis' was unfortunate at the Wanganui spring gathering, and is galloping well at present. The daughter of Advance will probably sport silk in the Te Hiwi Memorial' Handicap at Levin to-day.
Bobrikoff is reported to lie getting through good work, and lia-i been supported for the New Zealand Cup. lie will be amongst the starters in the Champion Plate at Treiitham on the 23rd inst.
Mr. T. H. Lowrv's slashing two-year-old colt, Kohinoor, wiio was beaten by a head in the Hastings Stakes, i- a likely starter in the Juvenile Handicap at Napier Park. California struck himself whilst galoping prior to the Hawke's llav meeting, and was consequently an absentee from that gathering. The (lying chestnut will, howcvei, be amongst the runners it Trenthain. liallyshannon, the full-lirot.her to Shannon Lass, who romped home in the Waipatu Handicap at Hastings but week, is a likely runner ill the Alutriri Handicap at Greenmeadows to-day.
Of the lmck hurdlers seen out ut l[.i-t----ings. Martvrium jiiinjK't] fairly well, and only requires a little more confidence to win races. She can beat the best of them between the sticks, but has .1 good look at a fence before she takes it. Erl Kins was bleeding freely at the no»e after each event and was hardly at his' best. Pressor's horses and Jenkins' horsemanship are generally much ill evidence at the Otnki spring meeting, l/ast year Jenkins rode live firsts and three seconds.
Bobrikoff won the Railway Handicap at Napier Park last year. lie will have 1211) more in the saddle to-day.
That prince of disappointing hors'es, Moscow, was recently leased to a Tfuwke's Bay sportsman, Mr. A. White, by Mr. " Iliglidcn".
11l the Telegraph Handicap at Ble.iheim. Te Tin and Shannon Lass ran a dead-beat for first place, and did not run first and second respectively as telegraphed. The open hurdle race at Napier Parklooks fairly open. The top-weight, Cma/.on, ran third on the opening day when apparently short of work, and scored very easily oil the sveond da\\ Kangihaeta carried 11.11 to the fore at the same place, and ran 1% miles in the fair time of Hnrin. 18scc., but failed to show up on the following day. Foreit ran second each day, only being bcnbi bv a neck in the Te M-.iiianga Hurdles. Forest meets both Coray.on and Kangihaeta on 411) better terms to-day. The others did not shine at Hastings. When Waimaria and llatley last met —at' llorowhcnua last month—there was only a pound between the pair, Waimaria winning comfortably. In the first Hack Hurdles at Otaki, the Porirua horse is set to give Hfttley nearly three stone. (If course Waimaria has been winning many races, but Ilatley, although idle. Is still very much alive! "Tartar" Julian will pilot ltangihaeta at Napier I'ark. 11. Telford being engaged at Otaki with Jos. Prosscr'i hurdlers.
First (inn must be counted amongst the unlucky ones. The Aucklaiulcr aililcil another second 'to his record by lillin" the role of runner-up to Cork, to ■whom lis- w»* giving 2st. in Uie Xgataraivn link Handicap at Hastings. IT' is more miiliitions to-day, and takes on open cattle at the Park. Woodhev always runs prominently at Xapior Park, anil will open the season with a run in the Park Stakes this aft • noon. Lady Medallist is expected to make good running in the big races at Otaki. She is said to have .picked up a lot since her defeat at Wangaaui. That good and ill luck move in cycles is believed in by many; and most men engaged in the racing'of horses, it m.iv be°said. embrace that view. The case ol the Duke of Portland, of whose success ill the Jockey Club Stakes of 10.000 sovs we heard last week by cable, furnishes 'a striking ease in point. In the 'Bos and Ws horses carrying the colors of nis Grace put up great records, and in one year alone they captured no less a sum than ,1173,858.' Those were the da) a when Dame Fortune smiled on the "white jacket, black sleeves and cap." Then came frowns from the fickle jade, and, despite the fact that the Duke oi Portland held one of the finest studs in the world at Welbeck, in which -were ineluded the famous St. Simon and Carbine, few races of any note have gone down to his account for many years, and his horses last year only captured stake-money to the extent of i'l!)74 Ids. The victory of Phaleron in the Jockey Club Stakes may therefore he termed an interruption in a long spell of llluck. Phaleron, ivho -was bred by his owner, is l>v the Irish sire fialllnule, and is out of the St. Simon mare Mrs. 1 111: - torwlck. The latter, it is interesting to remark, won the Oaks for the Duke of I Portland in 1898.
