HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Tin: New Plymouth Hortiiiiltural Society's- general committee met last night. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr. (J. Tisch) presiding, Mesdames McKellar and Kllerm, Misses B. Smith and Hempton, Messrs. S. \V. Shaw, 1\ Goodaere, J. Paton. K. \V. Griffiths, A. Hooker, H. Dempsey, \Y. W. Smith, and 1\ \V. Sandford. . Apologies were read from Mesdames Paton, lUiss'el', Dockrill,-and Salt, and Miss Pcrcy-Smitii. A letter was read from the Borough Council offering t'he use of the Council Chamber and the old circulating library for 2s lid for the rose show if no charge j were made for admission, but charging X.l if an admission fee is fixed.—lt j transpiring that a charge of sixpence w,h.s to 'he made, .Mr* Shaw* livowd, and Mr. Goodaere seconded, that either St. Mary's) Hail or Whiteley Hall be engaged.—Carried. Ihc meeting then went into t'he matter of fixing the date of the society's annual rose show. It had been suggested that the show should be held on t.he King's Birthday, November Wth, but it was pointed out that there were already big functions fixed for that date. —Mr. Hooker moved that the show be held on Thursday, November 18th.— This was withdrawn after discussion. »nd it wa* decided, on the motion ot Messrs. Shaw and Goodaere, to hold a | show on the King's Birthday.

Tt was decided to endeavor to secure professional rose-growers as judges. The following ladies and gentlemen will be asked to act at the rose show:— Judges for decorative section, Meadows J. C'. Webster, 11. E. Fookes, and A. Standish; stewards, Misses Hempton and Smith, Colonel .Messenger, and Mr. W. W. Smith.

It was also decided that children's sprays', etc., should be made up in the hall on the morning of the show between 9 and 10.30 o'clock, and that Mrs. McKcllar and Mr. Sandford superintend this work.

I'pon the motion of Mr. Goodacre, *t was decided to notify school-teachers of the children's competitions, and asking them to encourage the children to make entries.

Names of judges to be asked to act at the spring show were submitted, and the secretary will communicate with the nominees. _ ,

In answer to ill*. Goodacre, the e.iairnian said that non-members of the society were eligible to compete ill the cottage garden competition for the Mayor's prizes.
