UNIVERSAL MILITARY TRAINING.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PETITIOXIXG PARLIAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association Auckland, Last Night. The National Defence is circa lating a petition for presentation to Parliament urging .the Legislature to take steps to provide for universal military training. The petition states that the people of New Zealand view with 'alarm the absence of that general training for home defence which has been made imperative by the military and the naval devices of modern times in both Europe and Asia, and believe that in spite of the sacrifices made by tfie volunteers of the Dominion, the voluntary system has proved to be inadequate for the purpose intended. "Public opinion," the petition adds, "is consequently strongly in favor of the universal and compulsory training of the youths of the community under ooiiditions which will not interfere umliUv with civic responsibilities." The pclilii>:i is being largely signed.
