AMUSEMENTS.
" THE BKEED OF THE TRESHAAIS." ;ht "The breed of the Treehams," produced in the Theatre Itoyul last night, was one of the strongest dramas that Air. J. ''. 0. Williamson lias even sent to New "' Plymouth. The cast was an exceptiona!- '.': ly strong one, ami still served only as a background or setting for the "star," '. i llr. Julius Knight, an actor of marked ''ability, and a man who puck-all,. '"held tile Hour" for iiic wlioi;- evening. .'' The men who'ean do this ale not many, : "'! and Air. Julius Knight is one of them. I" He had a fine part. Hi,j was the ehar- : '> acter of an adventurer, a free lance, a bit of a fire-eater, a mercenary soldi ;v, a and, peculiarly enough, he proved th'-it, ,l as amongst thieves, so there is honor ' u amongst traitors. He was singularly a frank in his frequent confession that he, Lieutenant Heresby, better known as fj "The Hat," was anything but respect"i able. But he was loyal—loyal as a ro/k
■i —to his friends and co-traitors, even : ' though the latter "turned dog" on him. His last act ill the drama of the treason was his destruction of papers which had - been produced against his colonel am! - fellow-conspirator, Colonel Sir Clement ' Hungerford (Mr. Reynolds Dennislon) and without which the la tier's treason could not be proved. He, too, placed well, and it was a difficult role that was given him, as courtier, loyalist soldier, and leader of a conspiracy to join tli« Parliamentary army. We 'must mention here that the story was laid in the seventeenth century, when the Cavaliers and Roundheads were fighting. Miss 1? Guildford Quin was well placed as Margaret Hungerford, a girl fresh from ths Paris convent, heart-whole and fancv free until she met Cornet Francis Trcsliam (Air. George Alallalieu). She was particularly good in the scene where sue failed to understand that "The Rai.'could sell his sword and his honor to the highest bidder. Air. Sidney Sterling, as Viscount Dorsington, and Mr. George Chalmers, as Colonel Sir Henry TJrwcn, did their work well, the latter's part finding favor with -the audience throughout. Another clever impersonation, with a delightful freshness about it, was that of "Batty," a parcntless lad who made a hero, almost a god, of Lieutenant Rercsby, and who was eventually instrumental in bringing the principal villain face to face with his treason and with his accusers. This part was tak"n by Miss Millie Lemprierc. Tile minor parts were well filled. The drama was ! full and powerful, and the large audi- , ence left well pleased with the entoi'- ' lainment provided. In conclusion, the work of the orchestra must be mentioned, the overture and instrumental music being rendered in a masterly style.
WEST'S PICTURES-TO-NIGHT. The fifth series of West's Pictures will be screened in the Theatre Royal this evening, and referring to the programme ■ shown in Napier a few nights ago, the | H.B. Herald sajs:—"An entirely new I and altogether excellent programme was presented at the Gaiety Theatre last evenI ing, and it was once more apparent from the large audience lhat the popularity of these entertainments is well maintained. The theatre was crowded in . every part, th: l r.udioneo showing thi'ir appreciation by frequent bursts of applause, and all present spent u most en-1 joyable evening. Three classes of pictures were shown, the scenic, dramatic and comic alternating. Of the scenic films one representing various phases of life in Lapland was particularly effective, the movements of a. herd of reindeer evoking considerable interest. The Three Musketeers' was au admirable dramatic series, decided above the ordinarv and realistic, exciting incidents in Duma's famous novel created great up plause. An industrial scries represencing the work connected with lobst-T fishing also met with approval. T:ie comic element was supplied -hv 'Billy's Bugle,' 'Jacko, the Artist,' -Fatal Sneeze,' '.Mrs. Bonny's Suitors,' 'Universal Viin,' and it would be difficult to say which of them caused the greatest amount of amusement."
