A RICH GOLD REEF.
STRUCK NEAR DUNEDIX. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Lust Night. The Waipori correspondent of the Evening Star state.? that a wonderfully rich stone has been opened up in Canton reef, adjoining the Opa mine, at Waipori. Three pounds weight of stone is estimated to yield from £3O to £4O worth of gold. The reef was prospected some years ago and abandoned. The present prospecting has been going on for about three months. The reef is being developed by a syndicate composed of Waipori and Ditnedin residents. Several years ago the reef was opened up by a party of Chinese, who were unable to cope with the water, and had to abandon it. Work of a spasmodic kind has been carried on now and again by Europeans in the hope of developing the reef, but all have ended in failure! A few months ago, however, Mr. Lewis Pcrsall induced a few others to appoint him to find funds to give the reef a more systematic trial. The first shaft was sunk to a depth 1 of 50 feet, and then abandoned, and the syndicate who now hold the lease sunk another 25 feet and drove from that level. The reef which had been cut runs for Ift to Ift Cm in width, and some of the stone is practically a mass of pure gold. One piece, 320z in weight, yielded 12oz of gold, and another Goz. piece gave 3oz of gold. There is every indication of the reef being permanent and very neb.
