FOOTBALL.

"OLD-TIMERS" AT PLAY. There was a very sparse attendance yesterday at the match between the New Plymouth and Waitara '• veterans" in aid of the I'ecreation Sports Ground funds. The definition of the word " veteran" had to be considerably strained on both sides, beardless boys playing shoulder to shoulder with bald-headed fathers of football. The New Plymouth team played in a kaleidoscopic uniform, which, whilst it undoubtedly lent a variety of color to the scene, was not indicative of any burning desire to make the fixture attractive. The game was' a hard-fought one, and some of the oldtime players, well prepared, groomed, and rubbed down, showed glimpses of their old form. The off-side rule was a tremendous bother to some of them, whilst they evinced to the full the nigbyites' relish of " sacks on the mill." Every try scored was the result of good work, and there were sfomc very meritorious pieces of work. New Plymouth won by 11 points to ',). The winners' score was made, up of tries scored by J. Woods (2) and R. Callender and a goal kicked by Allan Smart. For Waitara, Joll and Foreman scored tries, and Parker kicked a penalty goal. Mr. A. Humphries was referee. The Taranaki Northern Union team leave for Wellington this morning.
