Archbishop Kelly at the Catholic Congress entered a strong protect against the Education Department auth. orising the use in training colleges of Carlyle's "Heroes and Hero Worship' as text-book, because, of the passage in it in which Knox is contemptuous;? refused worship of the image of the Virgin Mother. Mr. Malum, a Federal member, said it was an outrage on the Catholic community that their money should be used fo'r disseminating lies. The passage was a libel on one of their dearest doctrines, ne hoped the community would not rest until the book was withdrawn by the Department and an apology made to the Catholic people.
