DISTRICT NEWS

TIKORANGI, From Our Own Correspondent) It is rumored that a meeting of the local branch of the Farmers' Union is to be held at an early date. i An officer of the Dairy Department was in the district last week conferring with the directors of the Dairy Company in regard to the pasteurising- methods which they have decided on. I am pleased to report that one of our oldest residents, Mr. E. Lye, who has been laid up for some time, is now able to get about again. Mrs. C. H. Jury, whilst engaged >n milking, met with a painful accident, necessitating medical aid. It appears that the cow which Mrs. Jury was milking slipped on the concrete floor of the shed, crushing her hand, which was very badly lacerated, on the bucket.

The annual meeting of subscribers to • the Public Library was held on Monday ' evening, Mr. Hinc presiding. The report ; a'nd balance-sheet, which were adopted, showed the total receipts for the year to be £3O !)s 7'/ 2 d, and the expenditure £22 17s 4d, leaving a balance to be carlied forward of £7 12s 3</ 3 d. The committee, with the exception of Miss Sn.'ll, who is leaving the district, and whose place was filled by Miss West, were vtelected. As a statement of receipts and expenditure made up to December 31 is required by the Government annually for the purpose of allocating the subsidy, it was decided to change the end of the financial year to that date. Votes of thanks to the officers and committee for their services for the past year and a vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. It is a fixed belief with many people that Scotsmen have no sense of humor, but that it is a fallacy has again been proved, this time by the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie. Minister of Agriculture. For has not the Hon. Thomas given us his word that the Government of which he is a member is a good, clean Government? And he further declares that if after this assurance the country does not respond to the call he would consider it waste of time to continue political work. Now. was the Minister joking, or was it the lobster, for it is a peculiar thing that this self-same gentleman has during almost the whole of his political career been what is termed a "wobbler." and it is only within the last few months that he has definitely decided which party to support. This at once suggests a conundrum. If it too\the Hon. T. Mackenzie twenty-four vears to find his political haven, how long will it take the average cocky?
