WANGANUI MEETING. Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine The sum of £7OBO was put through the totalisator, as again jt £7687 last year. Results:— Flying Handicap—Gold Lace 1, Nicotine 2, Longner 3. All started. Wou by a neck. Time, lmin 1G 4-ssec. Maiden Handicap—fTrue Shot 1, Celaeno 2,Tiatchet 3. NOTES OX THE MEETING. (By "Jfoturoa"). Wanganui, Last Night. TU-rc was giorious weather, gool fields and interesting racing for the first day of the Wanganui meeting. Lady Medallist scored very easily in the Guineas. Xylophone made play for five furlongs, where Lady Medallist raa into the lead, and after repulsing -i strong challenge by the favorite, Broadsword, ran in on easy winner. All Red started a hot ordpr in the Spring Handicap, but moved off slowly.' Irish Ride led for half a mile. Lady Luck took up the running and led into the straight. Here Coronctted came with a brilliant run and Lady Menschjkoff, on the rails, joinvd issue. 5 great finish resulted in a win for Coronettcd by a neck from Lady Lucy, with Lady Menschikoff a length away next, aDd All Red fourth.
Gold Lace just lasted long enough to win the Flying from Nicotine, who came with a great rattle from the distance.
A hot favorite in Thetis failed in the Maiden Handicap, True Shot winning all the way. Belario carried most coin in the open hurdles, hut was the first horse beaten. Exmoor led for a mile. Mount Cook led into the straight and won comfortably, Anemone being a close fourth. In Hurdles Wirral started the hottest favorite of the day, leading to the three-furlong post, but closed up quickly when tackled by Waimaria, who won without an effort. Wirral beat Moose by a head for second, Clemency r oeing last.
Dr. Shimosc was the best backed in the Hack Handicap, but shaped indifferently. Timothy ran a good race, and was only caught in (Tie last hundred yards, being beaten by a neck.
Merriwa fell in the Guineas, but t!ie rider (Luke Wilson) and the horse escaped Injury. There were no falls in the hurdles.
