The practice of importing -working sheep dogs from Home seems to be growing. Two more were brought out by the Ruapehu on Tuesday. Their destination is Canterbury.
On the motion of Mr. Quilliam (Covet t and Quilliam) letters of administration in the estate of the late John Osborne George, deceased, have been granted by the Supreme Court to Annie Jane George.
In June, 1911, will „_rnr the jubilee of the presentation of the colors 'to the Taranaki Rides. Captain licllringer suggested to the members of the company last night that they should endeavn'i to hold a big function on that nay. and in the meantime secure the assistance "f the Indies in worMn-r fresh colors, the present llajjs being now very frail. Dr. Tudor Jones, lecturing on ''Evolution" in Wellington, said that as one | who had come from England, it appeared to him that lli:» birds imported to New Zealand from the Old Country sang here, with a different note, and lie had the authority of one of the most prominent professors l for suggesting that they had taken largely the notes of the New Zealand birds-.
The marine underwriters have lost pretty heavily on the New Zealand trade this year. The Maori 'yjas insured for ,£40,000, and her cargo probably fo r £120,000. The Langton Grange' was valued at ,011,000, and she was insu.-sd after stranding at 75 guineas. The hull of the Waratah alone was valued at .tIoO.OOO, and hull and cargo were, it is said, insured for a quarter of a million.
A rather amusing remark was made by a Maori a few days ago not far from Hawera. The native was 1 riding a hack homeward, wlien, very suddenly, the horse dropped dead under him. A goodly number of settlers were soon o.n the scene and pronounced the animal dead, whereupon the native very seriously remarked: "By korry, he never serve me that trick before—this is the first time
he do it." The latest thing in telephone switchboards is the "central battery," such as has recently been installed at Invercargill and Amaru. All subscribers' batteries are done away with, and one 'phone practically consists of a bell, a transmitter, and a receiver. There is no handle, and no need to ring up. The mere act of taking the receiver off the hook attracts attention at the exchange, while replacing it indicates auloI mnticnlly that the conversation is over.
Dr. Collin?, of Wellington, who has just returned fro m a visit to England, said the. impression of England which remained with Mm was that it was, as a country, becoming more and more the millionaires' playground. From all ove r the world wealthy people went there, and England's position in that respect was more remarkable than that of any other country he knew. It was easy to I see that this must have an effect upon I trade generally, for the visitors were I usually very liberal when it came to | spending.
A good deal of evidence has been given before the d'olice Commission on the iulvisii.lilene.ss of establishing some system of physical training in connection with the force. Host of the witnesses who have been asked for their opinion appear to favor the idea. An exception in the person- of Sergeant Stewart, of Wellington, has been met with, however. ■■Que ounce of tact .11 suppressing a street row," iie said, "in worth all tlie physical training that Samlmv ever invented." Tf a constate used tact, and did not knock a mm about, the crowd would always assist him. Mr. Bishop (Commissioner) said he had seen the reverse in other places. Attention is drawn to the recital to lake place this evening; in St. Mary's Church ni 8 o'clock. The choir, with -Miss linker as soloist, will sing portions of the -li'iid I'salin, a work of Mendelssohn given here many years ago. The collection will'be on behalf of the organ fund, towards which a liberal response is asked. The Haweia County Council, finding the Mount Kginont nietaj supplied by the Railway Department unsuitable, re-sc-ntly sent representatives to vniun»ii, on the .Main Trunk railway, to -.Aspect the stone there. It was found suitable, but tile railway freight -was found to be os Sd a yard. The representatives, says the Star, were prepared to enter into contracts for the supply of metal, which would have meant over .t'.">,(iUO to the Railway Department. That was
a prospective revenue which, under ordinary circumstances', tlie Department would have eagerly welcomed, but when
the Uawera county representatives deniifd ia complete' airrnngeniciits the* were met with the rebuff: "No trucks!'"
According to n suggestion by the chairman of the llawcra Comity Council, there is reason for the Railway Department's action: "it wants to lorce the comity to take the Mountain metal!" This, if it is true, is, as the Star says, a grave state of all'a.is.

The new Patea hospital was officially opened on Wednesday. Mr. 0. V Pcarce, M.P., to whom had been delegated the task of presiding at the opening ceremony, reviewed in his speech the circumstances which have enabled J'atea to secure so flnc a hospital. First and foremost came the generous hequest of the late Mr. Mcßroom, who left to the hospital an estate of land endowing the Board with an annual in-
come of about .£2OO. Apart from this. | Mr. Mcßroom bequeathed in trust to I the hospital a sum of £l,lOO. The,, the [lnto Mr. Napier bequeathed to the hospital a sum of £2OO. The cost of the 'new hospital amounts to £3748. a'ld about £I2OO lias been further expended in furnishing and other necessaries. In all a liability of something like £4050 has' to lie met. A sum of £2OOO has been borrowed by the Board from the Public Trustee, and £l.wo has been saved out of the trust account. There remains a deficiency of £I4OO, and it
is hoped that this'will be largely re- [ duced by the proceeds from the bazaar now opened. In iiis speech Mr. Pearcc made eulogistic reference to the action of Dr. Valint'me, who had effectively assisted the people of the Patea district in their endeavors to have their district separated from that of W.mganui, a cour* assuredly in the best interests of all concerned!— Press.
