DEMAND FOR IMPROVED LICENSING LEGISLATION.

MASS MEETING AT DUNEDIN.

A mass meeting was held in tlie Garrison Hull to-night, under the auspices of the no-license '|iarty, with the object of I making u demand for improved licensing legislation. Despite the fuel that ruin fell all the evening, tl..<, attendance was so large that accommodation in the hall proved iiwull'icient, and an. overflow meeting was held in the Salvation Army barracks.

Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P., who was to have been one of the speakers, was allsent owing to ill-health. .Speeches were delivered by Mr. A. S. Adams (chairman), Revs. L. M. Isitt and .1. Dawson, Mrs. K. L. Stevenson, Yung Liang Hwang (Chinese Consul), and the Hon. .1. T. Paul. Itcference was made to the preponderance of the vote in favor of nolicnwe, and it was contended that the no-license party was suffering mi injustice, inasmuch as it was in a majority lint had to submit to tile will of the minority, owing to the law requiring a tilree-lifths majority before licenses could be abolished.

The following motions were carried with enthusiasm:—

"That this meeting of citizens of Hunedin allirnw (I) that the time lias now come when nil questions at the licensing polls should be decided by a Iwro majority vote; (2) tlint a Dominion option vote should he taken triennial!}', in addition to the local option \otej and ur"cs upon the Government and Parliament its respectful demand for immediate legislation to secure these reforms. "That members of this great meeting express deep indignation at the violation of the solemn promise given to the Natives by the New Zealand 1 Government that no liquor licenses should ever he granted in Iho King Country. They call upon representatives of every section of the Christian Church and all Press editors and inemhfers of l'arliamcnt, to whom the safety of the Maori race and honor of nation is dear, to urge upon tbe Government to at once annul, the licenses granted and attend to this evil."
