The Rosamond did not arrive on SatLiday till nearly 7 p.m., being about nine hours overdue. She was a full fillip and could make but little headway against the heavy sea with her available* power, for she averaged less than six knots. Her steaming time from Wellington was about 30 hours. She got away h- Onehunga about midnight and returns to-morrow.

THE K.OONYA.

The Koonya was expected from tlic tfl'iff ..nil other South Island ports at Wellington yesterday, and is timed to l°avs there to-day for New Plymouth and the We,t Coast. .

Mr. Sewel! joined the Rosamond at Wellington or Thursday as second officer, and Mr, Yrankie wenE ashore for orders.

Duiing the past fortnight the shipping trade lije been brightening (says the Wellington Dominion), and more cargo is now offering for the coastal steamers. On Thursday the whanvs looked busy, especially where the small steamers lay, and practically all those that sailed had large cargoes. The British-India Company's steamer TJmta, n«w completing discharge at Wellington, has a crew of eighty-live all told, arid there are only ten whites among Ihem. The firemen and sailors are Mahomcdans, as nre also most of the stewards; a few of the latter are flonmse (from Portuguese India). The cart-enter is a Chinaman, and the sailmaker i» Irom the Seychelles. Much controversy has arisen of lat: 1 in connection with' the substitution of Chinese for British crews in ships of the mercantile marine (says the Svdniv Daily Telegraph). According to statistics just received from the Board of Trade by the Imperial Men-hunt Serviec fiuild, the numbers of Chinese shipped at eighteen the principal ports in the Tniteil Kingdom during the veari l»0fl. 1907. and 11)08 are 3100, 40,52, and •4H13 respectively. From tliis, of eottrs'. it would appear thitt the new language' test for seamen imposed liv the Board of Trade has arrested the influx ol Chinese seamen in British ships. ■
