.Mr. 11, Halliwell, of Ilawera, is on a visit to New Plymouth.
The Hon. 0. Samuel, M.L.C., and Mrs. Samuel returned to New Plymouth last night by the express train. They both appear to he in excellent health. A large number of friend's met them at the station.
At a meeting of Waiupu Anglican Synod yesterday, Archdeacon Alfred Walter Averill, of Christchurch, was elected bishop of the dioces'e. The eiection has still to be confirmed by the standing committees of various dioces.is iin New Zealand.—Press wire.
■Hwang, the Chinese Consul-Gencral, arrived in Christcliurch yesterday and called on the mayor. To-day he meets the consular representatives, and will be welcomed at a public meeting in the evening. He leaves (states a Press message) on Saturday for Dunedin.
Writes a London correspondent: "A New Zealander has done well to come out at the top of the examination fop' commissions in the Royal Army Medical Corps, There were Si entries', but only 20 of the candidates got through. At the head of the list stands the name of G. If. Hive (Taranaki), .St. Bartholomew's Hospital, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., with 632 marks."
