IMMIGRATION AND DEFENCE.
COMMENT ON AUSTRALIAN PRO-
POSALS. By Cable— Pres* *sociation.—Copyright London, September 14. The Standard warmly eulogises the disposal of a portion of the Australian patriotic subscriptions towards training farms, and emphasises the logical connection between immigration and defence. It argues that the establishment of a naval college in Australia is a doubtful experiment, and says that the collegian system introduced* of late years into naval education in Britim is a complete reversal of sound tradition. The results of it have yet to be tested. It warns Australia that the elementary conditions of sea power ire only learnable at sea and under disciolme, and, say., meanwhile let the Commonwealth get men. It hopes Australia s example 1,1 promoting immigration in connection with the British League will be followed by New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.
