ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS

ORGANISATION AT TARIKI. On Friday evening a number of residents of Tar'ikd and the neighboring roads who take an interest in acclimatisation matters met in the Tariki Hall to discuss in what manner they could assist the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society and improve the fishing and shooting in the district. Mr. C. F. Young was in the chair, and the president of the Taranaki Society, Mr. J. E. Wilson, explained what the Society had done and hoped to do in providing game and fish. He also gave information on several points of interest to those present. Eighteen were present at the meeting, and after hearing what Mr. Wilson had to say, decided to form a strong committee to act as a sub-committee of the council of the Society. Mr. Young was elected chairman, and Mr. W. N. Stephenson secretary. The object of the committee will be to assist the Society in its work and to look after the fish and game liberated in its district, and to make suggestions from lime, to time to the council of the Society. The establishment of these committees in different parts of the Society's district ih a great cnco:rto those who have for y.'ars past been quietly working to improve sport. One material advantage lies hi the fact that where the residents of .i I district are taking sii'h a personal :nIte'rcst in preserving game the more i,r less speedy extinction of poaching is certain Tariki entlmsiisU have established a rearing pond which on Friday received ten thousand fry which had been purchased by the Taranaki Society from the TTawera halchvrv. The pond lias bee n erected on Mr. llarkncss' property and will be under the supervision of Mr. Vaughan Hnrknesg. It is built of wood and. is twenty feet in length, three feet wide and three feet deep, and has a good flow of water from .«. permanent supply. The Society found the timber and the work of excavating and building has been carried out by some of the members of the Tariki'committee. Mr. J. Therklvson kindly gave the necessary perforated zinc,- -nails, etc., required to i complete it. j The council of the society hopes that committees will be set up in other parts of the district and rearing ponds established where there is good fishing water, as when the projected hatchery is in use next season there will, it is expected, be more fry hatched out than can he handled by the. Society's home ponds, and the outside ponds will serve the dual purpose of relieving the home pond and ensuring a Tegular supply of strong fish for liberation in those parts of 'the district where they will be looked after.

The Tnglewood committee is moving to have a pond made and the council hopes to have applications for ponds from other parts of the district.
