AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANAKI. A HOLLOW WIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association.
I Auckland, Last Night. I The representative Rugby football match played yesterday between Auckland and Taranaki teams resulted in a win lor Auckland by 18 points to 5. The game attracted an au.ndance of over UOOO, and included tlie Vice-Kegal party. Auckland, playing 'with the wind in the first spell, scored two tries, Scllars and Murray touching down. Early m the second spell Taranaki became aggressive, but the Auckland defence was equal to the strain. In going down to a forward rush Renwick received a sligut concussion, and was carried off the field in an unconscious condition. Auckland's additional score comprised four unconverted tries, which were obtained by Hayiward, O'Lcary and McGregor (2). Taranaki's points were the result oi a most sensational try scored by Cameron, who ran from near midfield and practically beat the whole of the Auckland back division. Dive converted the try. The concluding stage of the game was very fast and exciting. Mr. J. Williams, late of Dunedin, referced.
HAWKE'S BAY CHAMPIONSHIP. Napier, Saturday Night. The match between Rovers (Hastings) and Ahurin to-day for the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union's shield ended in a draw, each side scoring six points. WELLINGTON DEFEATS OTAGO. Dunedin, Saturday Night. The football match, Wellington v. Otago, was played this afternoon on the ' Carisbrook ground, which was in capital order. The weather was fine, and the attendance numbered about 9000. In
the first spell Otago forwards, by good play, kept the upper hand, and scored a try. O'Sullivan also crossed the line, but lost the ball, and later on Fitzpatrick repeated the performance. Tlis Wellington reps., playinj? with dash, opened the second spell with a rush in so Otago territory, and ten minutes latir McLcod got a try. Otago made gallant efforts to score, but the Wellington defence was sound. From a line-out near the quarter-flag, Walshe got possession and passed to "Ranji" Wilson, who dodged over the line. Mitchin6on safely, piloted the -ball over the bar. Shortly afterwards Mitchinson made a fine swerving run, and passed to McKenzic, who scored near the posts. Robert's placed a goal. From this onwards the game was not very interesting, as both teams were tired after a strenuous game. No further score was made, and the game ended: Wellington 13, Otago 3. Mr. A. Downes (Dunedin) made a satisfactory referee. McLeod and Walshe retired, the former with a broken rib and the latter with an injury to his kn?e. Ivemey also retired hurt, his knee having been wrenched.
p MANAWATU v. WAIRARAPA. | Palnierston X., Last Xight. ' In line weather and On ft good groiud Manawatu proved much too good for the Wairarapa team, which did not pliy up to its old-time reputation. Owing to a misunderstanding on the part of two forwards, who thought the game started at three o'clock instead of 2*30. Manawatu played the first fifteen minutes two men short. Ford and Buchanan scored tries for Manawatu in ihe first spell. In the Second spell Buchanan converted one scored by M. Carroll, ad "Chum" Carroll also scored. Then McKenzie scored for Wairarapa, BaH ! converting. The game ended: Manaj watu 14, Wairarapa 5. ! TARAXAKI AND WAXGAXUI MAORIS. Wellington, Last Night. A Rugby match between the Wang.inui and Taranaki Maori representative teams was played here on Saturday afternoon, the visitors winning by 20 to nil. UNIVERSITY TEST MATCH. Wellington, Last Night. There was beautiful weather yesterday for the second football match between Sydney University and a New Zealand University team. About 3000 spectators were present. The New- Zea- j landers won by 17 points to 14. New Zealand's score consisted of five tries, obtained by Robinson (2), Curtayne ; (2) and Onglev. one being converted by O'Leary. For New South Wales Brougt,ton, Fisher and Pookley obtained trie?. Fisher converting one., while Hughes kicked a fine penalty goal. New Zealand led throughout, and at the end of the first spell the score stood at H to 5. In the second half the visitors did much better. On the whole the game was disappointing to many spectators, who had heard so much of Sfdney University football. The visiters certainly threw th« ball about in a free-and-tasy manner, but it was too free-and-easy to be effective. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME WALLABIES v. KANGAROOS. By Cable—Press Association.—Copyright Received 12, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, September 12. The Wallabies b-at the Kangaroos by 15 to 0. The Wallabies gave a brilliant exhibition, and completely outplayed the Kangaroos.

The Auckland team to meet Taranaki at the Recreation Sports Ground on Thursday will be as> follows: Full-back, ' Charley;" three-quarters, Asher, Carlaw, Woodward, Neighbor; five-eighth, Jackeon; half, R. Wvnyard; forwards, Ma»krell, Griffin, Tyler, Bradburn, Wells and Seagar. The 4.15 p.m. train has been delayed to le.ave at 5.20 p.m. on Thursday, to enable country people to witness the match. The Auckland Star's football writer, reviewing the season's football, says: "During the season the Northern game has slowly but surely gained ground and practically the whole of the North Shore Club and the bulk of Newton have gone over to the opposition. The fight, which is only just starting, is going to be a tough one, and I venture to prophesy a big change during the course of the next two or three years." TTardgrave will captain Taranaki and R. Wynyard Auckland. "Opae" Asher is considered by the Auckland press to be the most brilliant I back ever seen in Australia.
