LOCATING A GAS LEAK.
lIOW NOT TO DO IT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A loud explosion in Messrs P. Hayman and Co.'s warehouse caused considerable sensation in Hereford street about 9 o'clock this morning. It appears that when Mr. Hayman entertd the shop he noticed a strong smell of gas. On opening the strong-room door the smell became more pronounced, and Hayman struck a match to investigate. Almost immediately a terrific report occurred, and a sheet of flame momentarily enveloped Hayman. H© was thrown violently backward, but luckily was not Tendered unconscious. His fae'e and hands were rather badly burned, and he sustained a very severe shock. Some idea of the force of the explos'on may be obtained from the fact that the back door of the warehouse, -which is about twelve feet away from the strong room, -was shattered into fragments, a new door having to be put in. About five feet in front of the strongroom i? a showcase, which was badly scorched by the sheet of flame.
