HELPING THE WORKERS. GREAT DEVELOPMENTS PENDING. By Cable.—Press Assoeiatioß.—Copyright Loiuion, September 9. Mr. Keir llardie, addressing trie Trade Union Congress, said the Labor Parly had put the right to work or maintenance in the forefront of its wmiauus, and now there was a ~iomise that both claims would be admitted. State insurance against unemployment would, he said, be equivalent to maintenance, and the development of the scheme would be the most revolutionary measure ever introduced into Parliament, for it would provide work. The Government also promised insurance against sickness. Altogether they were on tue eve of great developments.
THE STATE AND THE UNEMPLOYED. Received 10. 10.40 p.m. London, September 10. At the Trade Union Congress, 715000 votes against 712,000 rejected the Tiioposnl of the Union's Parliamentary Committee that the State should make grants to the trade unions for the bene'.it of the unemployed members. A similar resolution was passed at last Congress, but the miners' dcVp'atcs, representing half a million, are now opposed to it on the ground thut it would aggravate the unemployment. Resolutions were carried in favor of the reduction of the pension age to (SO and Labor Day celebrations in Brita.n. It was also resolved that Labor Exchanges should not be used to assist farmers having disputes with' their workpeople.
