RACING AND THE BOOKMAKER
MINISTERIAL VIEWS. OPENING OF A TATTERSALL'S ClAjB. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, September 7. At the opening of the New Zealand Tattersail's Club last night, the Hon. Millar said if certain people would go and see a race for themselves they would not find so much to condemn. Ho Viiought the club should become the headquarters of all forms of sport, including football, cricket, hockey, lawn tennis, and bowls. The result of the passing of the Gaming Act had been the putting of racing on a better footing. Bookmakers' payments, he said, materially assisted tlie clult. The Hon. Carroll, referring to bookmakers, said he had personal experience of them and found them good samples of manhood. He appealed to all concerned in racing clubs, to owners and bookmakers, to unite in true co-opera-tion to make it a success. Tattersail's Club should be the graduating school for bookmakers, and prove a valuable guide to clubs in granting licenses.
