WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place on the 25th instant, when there were present: Councillors W. A. McCutchan (in tho chair), li. v., Robertson, J. Anderson, J. M. Jo.ies, It. McCluggage, lE. Mcllroy, and A. Meredith.
The Council went into committee to consider tenders No. 10, 11, and 12 for formation of Upper Mangaehu and Mangarewtt roads, and on resuming the clerk reported that the committee recommended tho acceptance of the lowest tenders, J. Houlihan's, for all contracts. The report was adapted. The engineer's report was read and adopted, and it was resolved, on the ino- j tioa of Crs. MeCutchan and McCluggage, that the engineer be authorised to carry tut the suggestions embodied ini his report with regard to the readjustment of boundaries between the Clifton and Wliuiigamoniono. County Councils. A i.:uer from the Stratford County Couavil with regard to the maintenance of Ohura road was read, and on tho moliun of Crs. McCluggage and Meredith the following resolution was carried:— "That with reference to the letter of the Stratford County Council's committee, the Council be informed that as tho matter of the claim made by the Stratford County Council for maintenance of Ohura road between- Douglas and Strathmore is of a complicated nature, this Council is of opinion that it would be more advisable to refer same to a commissioner for his decision than to a conference between the two bodies."
_ Mr. A. Agostineri waited on the Council with regard to leasing a road reserve of about one acre on the Whangamomona road, and it -was resolved to grant his request for twelve months for a consideration of 5s iper annum. On the motion of Crs. Mcllroy and Meredith the following resolution was carried:—"That fa reference to his letters of the 7th and 14th inst., the Commissioner of Crown Lands be advisjd that the Council would be glad to have section 37, Huiakama Village, set aside partly as a cemetery and partly as a pound site, and thinks Hint, in view of the Hon. the Acting-Minister for Laids' expressed opinion, it) would be possible, perhaps, in this instance to have the section vested in the Council instead of in trustees, and would be glad therefore if the Commissioner of Crown Lands would sec if'this could be done; and subsequently the portion set aside for a cemetery could be vested in trustees, if considered desirable."
It was resolved, On the motion of Crs. McCutchan and McCluggagc, that Cr. Meredith and the engineer go fully into the matter of the £.3800 loan with the county solicitors, and obtain their opinion of the proposed change an the order of expenditure, after they have been fully apprised of all the facts or the case.
The Huiakama Daily Factory wrote in reference to tlic bad state of Kirai ■ oad, and it was resolved, on the motion of Ors. Meredith and Mcllroy, that this road he repaired .to the extent of £lO in order to give access to the factory. The clerk was authorised to advertise that all arrears of rates due on the 31st March, 11)09, remaining unpaid on tne 22nd September, 1009, would be sued for without further notice.
It was resolved, on the motion of Crs. Anderson and Meredith, that Mr J Diggins' letter he acknowledged and ,tlu position he fully explained to him re the survey made of the road through lis section, and his claim for compensation in re the survey of the two portions of his section which is thereby divided. On the motion of Ors. McCluggage and Jones, Mr. Franks was authorised to have a fence and gate erected on Arnold road in terms of his letter.
Or. Jones' action in sanctioning tho employment of a man for ten days on O'Connor road was confirmed by the Council.
On the motion of Crs. Robertson and Meredith a special order was instituted, as .per notice of motion given, declaring certain weeds to be noxious weeds with°in the county of Whangamomona. The general rate fo r the ensiling year was levied as follows for tho various ridings:—Strathinoro riding, l%d; Pohokura riding, iy,d; Central riding, 2d: Tahora riding, li/jd. The following allocations of rates accruing from by-roads were made:— Stratlnnore riding, %<l to by-roads, Id to Ohura. road; Pohokura riding, >/.d to Ohura road; Central riding, iy 8 d to Ohura road.
It was resolved, on the motion of Cm. Anderson and MeCut'cdinn, that tenders, to close Ml -next meeting, be calved for burning papa in connection: with the Whaßgamomona road J o am On the motion of Crs. McCutchan and McCluggage, the engineer was authorised to give effeat to his recommendations in io t'he proposals for construction of (ouneil buildings; tenders to close at the Council's October meeting. The petition in re the Mangaowhafa road £350 loan was referred to the riding member to got all papers in connection ■therewith completed. The report of the committee set up to consider the question of the cont-ol of traffic on the metalled roads of the county was adopted, and it was resolved that Lr. Anderson and the engineer brin" the committee's report to the knowledge ot the comity solicitors, with a vic lv to Iraming by-laws accordingly; and that l he matter of adopting the by-laws be therefore deferred until next meeting Ihe passing for payment of accounts totalling £302 15s concluded the business of the meeting.
