The original selection was slightly altered by Hardstaff replacing Fry. *Macalister, Hopkins, Whitty, Carkeek and Martigan were omitted from the Australian team. Foster won the toss and sent Tarrant and Moon fa, to bat. The first wicket went at 22, after 20 minute' play, Tarrant failing to stop one of Loners. Moon took 40 minutes of steady play to make his score. He was bowled off his pad.—Two for 41. Ten runs later Llewellyn on-played Cotter. The latter also captured Gillingham, making a record.—Four fwr 01. Hardstaff was 70 minutes at the wickets. He gave a chance from a return to Armstrong when 24.—Five for 57. Foster was taken cleverly in the slips and Austin went the same way after 40 minutes' steady play. The sixth wicket fell at 108,-Seven for 141. Ihe century took 05 minutes to compile. Armstrong accounted for the remaining three wickets with the addition of 47 to Hie total, the eighth wicket going at 164 and the ninth at 178. Rclf was sound and batted for 75 minutes. The innings lasted 190 minutes.
Australia has lost one wicket for 118. Noble, not out 03 Bardsley, 1.h.w., b Buckenham '.'. 0 Ransford, not out 50 Noble and Bardsley were first at the wickets. The former a single, and then Bardsley, without" scoring, retired leg before to Buckenham. Ransford followed, and Noble and he Were still together when stumps were drawn. Both .played steady cricket at the start but lively, good, all-round cricket afterwards. Fifty runs were hoisted m 55 minutes, and the conturv m 8a minutes.
