I THE RARAWA ENQUIRY. The Marine Department has Been advised that it has been found necessary to adjourn the Magisterial enquiry, which was to have been held at Auckland on Friday, concerning the Rarawa s boiler. The date of the enquiry has been fixed for next Friday. THE FIJI-MELBOURXE SERVICE. The Fijian Government will pay a subsidy of £SOOO per annum on the new Fiji-Melboupne four-weekly service, to be initiated by the Manapouri about the 22nd September, says the Otago Daily Times. The Union Company is acting in conjunction with the A.Tj.S.N. Company. , The conditions of the contract between the joint companies, as publish• d ( in the Official Gazette, are as under:— The.service to be a direct one betwsen 6uva and Melbourne, but Sydney to be a port of call on the return journey. A subsidy to be paid at the rate of £3OOO per annum. The schedule of freights to be the same as between Sydney and Fiji. The insulated space to cc not less than 50,000 cubic feet per vessel. It will be remembered that' Air. Sleigh undertook the establishment of! the subsidised service, but failed to go j on with it, and thereupon the Fijiin Government called for new tenders, returnable on the 31st July, with the -e----sult above stafed. The service is a temporary one to the end of the present year, for the purpose of meeting the demand for the carriage of fruit, but it is understood between the parties that if the temporary service prores successful it will be made permanent.
Although the towage feat performed by the Champion in towing the disabled Leicester Castle from Auckland to Sydney is a very creditable one, says a shipping journal, it is by no means a record. A few years ago the famous old ship Samuel Plimsoll was towed from Sydney to Fremantle—almost double the distance.
