The attendance numbered about 2000. The weather was fine and the wicket was improving. Noble and Hartigan opened, and the latter was thrown 'ut by Young fro m third man when the ;otal stood at 13. Noble went at 10: Macalister succumbed to an easy catch off the handle of his bat.—Three for 28. Ransford lasted 55 minutes, playing steady cricket. Trumper ended by putting up a skier. The fourth wicket was down for '4B, nnd the fifth for 84. Gregory played flukily, and was missed at short leg before scoring. An easy chance to run him out at 7 was missed by Young making a wild return—Six for Bft. The next three wickets fell for 11 runs. Several changes in the bowling were tried during the Hopkins-WhTtty partnership but were unavailing. Hopkins gave a chance at 13. The innings occupied 170 minutes. •Afterwards an exhibition game was played. ENGLISH NOTES. London, August 27. Hayes completed 2000 runs first this season. Middlesex scored 145 against Gloucester's 33 and 81 respectively. Tarrant i*ss), carried his bat through and took seven wickets for 18 and six for 49, including the "hat trick."
