MRS. BEVAN WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP. Palmerston X., Last Night. Mrs. Bevan (Otaki) defeated Hiss Brandon (Well'mgton) in the linal of the golf championship of New Zealand at the nineteenth hole. Palmerston X'., Later. The Now Zealand laities' championships finished to-day in superb weather, and in the presence of a crowd of ?jveral hundreds, which was most intensely moved by the. extraordinary keenness and quality of the semi-final and final games. It is generally recognised ' that golf at this meeting has been of a higher standard than any previous New Zealand ladies' meeting, and the performance of Mrs. Bcvan in the semi-final to-day, in knocking live more off the links' record will take a very great deal of beating. Her Si showed quite too much for Miss Humphreys, who was nevertheless playing golf that would have stood her well in any other heat, and read 70 for 15 holes. Both players showed splendid form throughout. The Brandon-tamper heat also showed very fine golf, though the cards, !)7 and OS. did not indicate this. It was a ding dong battle from start to finish, and anybody's game till the last green. A very large, keenly interested, and well behaved crowd followed the final in the afternoon. .Both started nervously, evidently'feeling the weight of the crowd and the responsibility. Mrs. Bevan was particularly nervous on the greens and lost the first hole by 6 to 4. Five halrcs followed, and. then a hole a-piece, Miss Brandon turning 2 up, and adding another at the tenth, only to lose the next three and two more halves in iivp, and Mrs. Bevan, with three to four, 'iccame one up and lost it—o to 5. At the seventeenth hole both were missing short putts. All along the eighteenth, it looked like Miss Brandon's hole match, hut Miv| Bevan saved it with a twelvcfeel put for five and winning the nineteenth with a ten-foot put on three to four, took the championship. The rounds were !I6 to 97, but would have been brilliant but for missing the short puts. The play through the green was unexceptional. The Consolation Handicap was won hv Miss Fulton (18), 1 down; Miss Sta'. <ord (10) 1 down; Miss Abraham (18) square. The prizes wore presented at an "At Home" in the .Municipal Hail to-night. The Manawatu Club's ladies touroarccnt begins to-morrow, and a considerable number is staying for it.
The reason why Miss Brewster was not entered for the Donnelly Cup at he big tournament at Palmerston was because she expected to be away in Napier by that time, battling with tne Taranaki hockey team.,
