A ballot by the Typographical Society on the question of ceasing work on 6eptember i, in furtherance of the demand for £3 a week as a minimum wage for compositors and letter-press machinists, resulted in a large majority in favour of pressing the demand. The position is now that unless the concession is made before August 31. the men will cease work on September 4. The Society discussed the question of vestrag industrial legislation in the Commonwealth and financing the Dreadnought gift.

WATERSIDE WORKERS CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. The Waterside Workers' Conference was concluded this morning. The question of affiliating with the Australian Federation was held over till the organising secretary has visited the various parts. The following resolutions were carried in committee:—That the conference congratulates Mr. LloydBeorge hipon introducing liis Budget, as it is an honest attempt to grapple with the evils of land monopoly in Great Britain; that the expenses of all delegates attending the conference be paid by the federation;.that the executive of the Lyttelton Stevedores' Union be the executive of the federation for the year. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mr. J. Reed; vicepresident, Mr. J. Jackson; secretary, Mr. H. Voyce; treasurer, Mr. F. Lurch; trustees, Messrs. O. Hensley qnd G. Walklin; organising secretary, Mr. D. M'Laren. Provision is to be made in the rules that the organising secretary is to be an officer cx-offieio of the federation.

THE OTIRA TUNNEL. THE BANK TO BANK CLAUSE. Christchurch, Last Night. The Hon. R. McKenzie, who passed through Christchurch to-night, stated he had had, an application from the Federated Miners' Union to apply the "bank to bank" clause in connection with the tunnel works in Otira. He said that as the ■work neither came under the gold or coal mining laws, his impreswon was that the clause could not be applied, but he was taking legal opinion.
