SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Board of School Commissioners met in the office of the secretary (.Mr. F. P. Corkill) on Friday. Present: Messrs. Wade (in the chair), Major, Simpson, and Jennings, M.P. The committee (the chairman aid Mr. Jennings) submitted a report on their interview with the Minister for Education respecting the Pukearulie site. The report was received and the committee thanked for its services.

Correspondence with the Secretary for Education respecting the board's powers with regard to the purchase of land for school sites was' further considered. Mr. Major moved the following resolution:—

" That the Board's solicitor be instructed to obtain from the Supreme Court its judgment upon the question of the validity of the board's action in purchasing land for school sites in exercise of the powers vested in the hoard under tho'Education Reserves Act, 1882, and the Consolidated Act of 11)08, and that it be a recommendation to Mr. Quilliam that the Hon. O. Samuel be retained as counsel."—The board's solicitor, who was present, expressed the opinion that it would not be possible to take proceedings in the manner proposed. The following resolution was then carried: "That, following the practice of the last thirty years', the Commissioners purchase land at Pukearulie for the purpose of a school site in good faith, and for the purpose of providing more convenient accommodation for the children of that district; and that they would respectfully request the Minister for Education to recommend the granting of consent by the Governor-in-Council."

Several applications for leave to mortgage and for transfers were acceded to, except one application for leave to mortgage, which was held over. Accounts amounting to £3O Is lOd were passed for payment. The treasurer reported a balance of £lBOl 9s 9d.
