About 10,000 were present at tiie match between the Maoris and the Australians. The first half was a walk-over for the Australians. Papakura secured a try, which Asher failed to convert, the spell ending Australia 10, Maoris 3. The second spell opened with prospects of an easy time for the local players, 5 points being added in the first few minutes. Then Powhuiwhui scored, but failed to convert his own try. The same player immediately after placed an easy goal off a penalty. The Australians, however, kept the score growing, and reached 21 against their opponents' 10. Then Kopana secured a try, but Asher failed to convert. The locals added a couple off a penalty, and just on the call of thne Puker e crossed, but Asher again failed to kick a goal. The game ended in a win for the Australians by 23 points to 16.

The football mateh, Otago v. Southland, was played here to-day in good weather. The visting team was very weak and suffered defeat by 35 points to nil. With the exception of a chance to kick a goal from a mark, the visitors were dangerous only once during the game. For Otago tries were scored by Sutherland (3), Davidson (3), Mitchell, Marston, and A. McDonald, two being converted, while Marston potted a goal.

TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. A great deal of interest is being evinced in the return representative mate]) between Taranaki and Wanganui, to he played on the Recreation Grounds, New Plymouth, on Thursday. The Wanganui team will reach New Plymouth on Wednesday evening, and during their visit will'stay at the Imperial Hotel. Special train arrangements have been made for the match, and country patrons' will be able to return home in tile evening after the game. Owi»g Jo Don Cameron and Tamu having been chosen in the North Inland team, and from other causes, the Taranaki team has undergone some altera tions. On paper, despite the absence of the above-mentioned players, it is the speediest combination Taranaki has had in the field for some years. Following is tlie team:—Full, Potior; threequarters, Con.
